Chapter 41 – Glenwood Springs

After we returned to our rooms following the full day rafting trip, we dried off and changed, and then went out for supper. Our parents took us to a different restaurant tonight, and since there weren’t any booths, the staff pushed three tables together so we could all sit together. After we ordered, Dad spoke to all of us.

“Tomorrow we’re going to do the mini-max rafting adventure and it will take place on the Roaring Fork River. I checked with our guide after we finished eating lunch and he told me that the rafts that we’ll be using this time are smaller and designed to be used by four people and a guide. He said they can also be used by just three people and a guide, or an additional person could sit in the middle, between the four with paddles, so I want to know how you want to do this?”

As the rest of us were thinking it over, Mom spoke up. “Earlier, after I heard our guide tell Mike that the rafts were designed for four people, I talked it over with Doris and we decided that we won’t go with you on this trip. We’ll spend the time wandering the streets downtown and possibly do a little shopping, if that’s alright with the rest of you.”

“Of course it is, if that’s what you want to do,” Lonny responded.

“And since you won’t be going with us,” Dad followed, “it means we’ll only need two rafts. And as I said, they’ll also work fine with just three people and a guide, so we’ll just have to decide how we’re going to split up. I think it would be best if we put the two youngest in different rafts, since this trip is going to be a lot rougher than our previous outings, seeing we’ll be in smaller rafts.”

“That’s why Doris and I decided not to go with you this time.”

“If we split up the boys, then how do we decide who to put in the rafts with them?” Lonny followed.

“I think Daniel should be in the raft with me and Devin,” I quickly stated to make certain my input was considered.

“And I’ll go with them,” Dad quickly volunteered. “That will leave Aaron and Lonny in the raft with Clint.”

“I’m glad that you’re allowing me to be in the raft with my son,” Lonny said to let Dad know he approved.

“I didn’t think it would be right to split you two up,” Dad confirmed, “and I believe it’s best that Aaron goes with the two of you, since he’s better at this than I am.”

“And you and Devin can take the positions at the front of the raft,” I responded, “and I’ll sit next to Daniel. That way I can help him if he’s having trouble.”

Now that this had been decided, the conversation shifted to talking about the river we’d be on.

“Like I said, this trip will take place on the Roaring Fork River,” Dad began, “which is a tributary of the Colorado River, where all of our other trips were held.”

“Did he tell you anything else about this new river?” Lonny asked.

“Yes, he said it’s narrower and there are some boulders that we’ll have to navigate around, so we’ll also be required to wear helmets, as an additional safety precaution. He also told me there are places where the river bed under the rapids undulates, which means there are areas where the ground suddenly rises and falls. To give you a visual image of what that will be like, think about how a snake’s body undulates when they move about. Picture how their bodies bend and create higher and lower areas along the length of their body, and that is how the ground beneath the water would look like.”

“Does that mean the raft will be going up and down when we go over that?” Clint asked.

“Yes, the water will drop down when it goes through the dip and rise up again as it travels over the humps that follow. That means you’ll have to be ready to react at a moment’s notice, because it will most likely cause the raft to jump around as it travels over that section. It will definitely make our jobs more difficult and demanding than what we’ve experienced on previous trips, so I want to make certain that you’re ready for this.”

“What class are the rapids?” I followed.

“He said they’re normally class III and IV, but at this time of year you can add another level to those ratings.”

“What time tomorrow will we be taking this trip?” Pa asked.

“It’s scheduled for 9:30, when we should all be well rested, and then at 3:15 we’re signed up for the Double Shoshone Rafting Adventure. I suggest we all make sure to get plenty of rest tonight, because tomorrow is going to be a very demanding and tiring day.”

“Since these trips will be a more difficult, it means you boys can’t stay up late. You’ll need to get plenty of rest so you’re ready to tackle the new challenges we’ll be facing,” Lonny stated as he stared directly at Daniel and Clint. “You’ll be paddling on both of those trips, so I want you to be rested and alert, not tired out and unprepared.”

“Don’t worry. We’ll take our shower early and then go to bed when Michael tells us to,” Clint agreed.

“I’m glad to hear that.”

“Do you ladies plan on joining us for the afternoon rafting trip?” Dad asked next.

“Yes, as long as we’ll be using an eight-person raft,” Mom answered.

“And I’ll volunteer to sit in the middle this time, since Cindy did it today,” Ma offered

After we finished eating and returned to the motel, we all went to our rooms. As soon as we got inside and the door had closed, Clint and Daniel started undressing faster than newlyweds on their wedding night. They were totally naked before Devin and I had even removed our shirts.

“We’ll shower first tonight,” Clint stated, and then he and Daniel headed into the bathroom.

While they were gone, I immediately set the alarm on my phone, so I wouldn’t forget to do it. And when I finished, Devin and I talked about how important it was going to be to keep an eye on Daniel during this trip, since he hadn’t been tested like this before.

“I almost wish Clint was going to be in the raft with us too, so we could keep him safe as well,” I stated. “I guess we’ll just have to rely on Pa and Lonny protecting him this time.”

“Seeing we’ll be dodging boulders on this trip,” Devin added, “I don’t think either of the boys should be in the front of the raft. There’s just too great of a chance that they could be ejected headfirst into one of those objects if the raft accidentally collides with one of them.”

“I know, and that’s why I suggested Daniel and I ride behind you and Dad, because there was no way I was going to take the chance of that happening to him. If I’m sitting next to him and our guide is right behind him, then both of us will be able to keep an eye on him. I hope that we’re not too busy doing our jobs to look out for him.”

“Yeah, so I hope they put Clint behind Lonny and my dad, and next to the guide so he can help to look after Clint. That’s because I don’t think Lonny will be able to keep looking over his shoulder to keep an eye on him.”

“Maybe they’ll only use Pa in the front section so Lonny can sit next to Clint instead. That way they’d be in a diamond formation on the raft, with Pa in the front, Lonny and Clint in the middle, and their guide at the back.”

“That’s a good idea, so let’s mention it to my dad in the morning.”

“Ok, and since Clint has more experience rafting than Daniel, I hope he doesn’t have any problems.”

Clint and Daniel were in the bathroom for at least a half hour, and when they came out they were laughing.

“What’s so funny?” Devin asked.

“Daniel said that after he heard we were going to have to wear helmets on this trip, he wondered if they’re going to put training wheels on the raft too,” Clint told us.

“And Clint said they’ll just put bumpers on the raft, like the ones on the bumper cars at an amusement park.”

“You two have a strange sense of humor,” I replied. “And you were in there for quite a long time.”

“Yeah, we, uh…” Clint began, but he stopped when Daniel grabbed his arm and tugged on it. “It’s ok. I’m sure they’ve already figured out what we were doing in there.”

“But you don’t have to tell them,” Daniel stated emphatically, while also blushing.

Now that they were out of the bathroom, Devin and I went in to take our shower. When we finished getting ready for bed, we returned to the main room, and both boys were laying on their bed and watching TV, still totally naked.

“Aren’t you two cold laying around like that?” I asked.

“Nah, Daniel turned the heater on high, like you did last night.”

I hadn’t noticed, since I was still quite warm from taking a shower. “It’s good to know that you two are able to take care of yourselves when we’re not around,” I teased.

“Yeah, I wouldn’t want to have to dress them every morning when we get up,” Devin added with a laugh.

“We’d rather have you undress us,” Daniel quipped.

“Too late, you’re already naked,” I shot back.

“You can do it tomorrow night,” he quickly suggested.

“Dream on,” I replied. “You have a boyfriend now, so you’ll have to do those things for each other.”

“Yeah, we do that already,” Clint followed with a smirk.

“But we’d be happy to let you and Devin do it instead,” Daniel added, but I had a feeling that Clint and Daniel weren’t talking about the same thing. I believe Daniel was merely referring to us undressing them, but Clint was hoping we’d do more than that.

“Daniel, you’re beginning to sound like a Clint clone,” I responded.

“Yeah, so maybe he’s rubbing off on me.”

“I’m sure you’ve been rubbing off each other,” I quickly offered, which caused him to look at me strangely, but he caught on when Clint responded and started blushing again.

“Yeah, we’ve been doing that all right,” Clint agreed, “and…”

It also caused Daniel to grab Clint’s arm to stop him from continuing, while also gritting his teeth shooting daggers with his eyes. It was obvious that he didn’t appreciate his boyfriend’s openness and willingness to share intimate details about their relationship with us.

“Ok, now that we’ve all showered,” I said to end this impromptu give and take before it got even more carried away, “let’s hit the sack. I’m sure we must all be tired enough to go to sleep, so cuddle up with your lover and enjoy some sweet dreams.”

“Ok,” they both said, and then we all got into bed. As soon as everyone was situated, I turned off the lamp between our beds and cuddled with Devin until, I too, drifted off to sleep.

After the alarm went off in the morning, Devin and I made sure that Clint and Daniel were up and getting dressed, and as soon as we were all ready, we went into the hallway and waited. When the others came out of their rooms, we headed out to the parking lot and the four of us got in Lonny’s car, and then he followed Dad to another restaurant.

After we ordered, Lonny made a comment. “Since you ladies aren’t going with us this morning and we’ll need the SUV to get to the outfitters, I’ve decided to give you the key to my car so you can use it until we return, which should be around 1:00.”

“Thank you. It’s very kind of you to let us use it,” Ma said. “We were thinking that we’d have to walk downtown from here.”

“Nah, it’s too far, so use my car instead. You can give me the key back later, before we go out for lunch.”

“And when we’re done eating,” Dad added, “we’ll have to hurry back to the motel so we can put on the wetsuits for the next trip.”

Once we back at the motel, Lonny handed his car key to Mom. “Thank you, Lonny. We’ll take good care of your car while you’re gone.”

We then made our way to our rooms, and all of us guys hurriedly changed for our next adventure, before waiting for the others out in the hallway for everyone else. As soon as they joined us, we headed out to the parking lot, but before we loaded into the car, Clint and Daniel decided to make an announcement.

“We both want to sit in the back seat with Devin on the way there,” Clint stated. “And we’ll sit with Michael on the way back,” Daniel added.

I believe Devin and I were both wondering why they decided to do it this way. Was it to let us know that they liked us equally or that they merely didn’t want to hurt either of our feelings. Either way, it was a nice gesture.

When we got to the outfitters, our guide noticed that our moms weren’t with us and quickly commented about it. “Your wives didn’t come this morning?”

“No, they thought this was more than they wanted to handle, so they opted to go into town instead, to do some shopping.”

“That’s not a problem, because you still have enough people for two rafts, and it will require an additional guide. Have you already decided as to who’s going in each raft?”

“Yes, we have,” and then Dad explained it to him.

After he knew what we were going to do, he made sure we got our life jackets and helmets first, and then he took us outside. The other employees had already taken two rafts outside and left them in front of the open overhead door that led into the warehouse. We merely had to carry them down to the trailer, which was smaller than the one we’d used before, since we were using smaller rafts. After we loaded them onto the trailer, we got into the van and prepared to make the trip to the new launch point.

Once we arrived there, we carried the rafts down to the water’s edge, and that’s when we discovered our old guide was going to ride in the raft with the other group, since they had fewer people. After our new guide introduced himself, he let us know that the other group would be going first, and we watched as they loaded up and shoved off. As soon as they were out in the current, we loaded into our raft and followed them down the river.

The trip started out slowly, but as the raft picked up momentum, we encountered the first set of rapids. As we began to make our way through them, the biggest problem was navigating around the huge boulders and rocks that were in our path. Fortunately, our guide was able to help us steer around them, but as we encountered each one, he would call out and let us which side of the raft should paddle harder. We’d react quickly and do as he requested, as we wound our way down river.

It didn’t always go smoothly, though, and sometimes the raft would crash into one of the boulders, but never head on, although one of those contacts resulted in quite a jolt that threw us all off balance. Fortunately, it happened on my side of the raft, and although these encounters were usually brief, they were still concerning. A couple of times, the contact was caused because the powerful current was pushing us toward the obstacle and we were unable to paddle hard enough to avoid crashing into it. And once we managed to get away from the boulder, our guide would alert the guys on the other side of the raft to start paddling harder to get us back on course.

When we got through that set of rapids, we entered a section of the river that was free of any more obstacles, but that ended when we came to the next set of rapids. This time as we were heading toward a large boulder, the raft suddenly dropped downward without any warning. When that happened, I instinctively reached my arm out in Daniel’s direction, similar to what a parent might do after slamming on the brakes to keep from hitting an animal or to avoid a crash.

At the time, Daniel was turning slightly toward the river as he paddled as hard as he could, so when the raft suddenly dropped downward, it caused him to come up off the seat that he’d been sitting on. Luckily, my hand caught the grab loop located on the back of his lifejacket and I was able to use that to keep him in the raft.

As I pulled him back onto his seat, he turned his head in my direction and his eyes were bulging out of their sockets, but we quickly had to start paddling again. At the same time, I heard our guide holler, “Nice catch” over the sound of the roaring water, to let me know he’d seen what I’d done. I didn’t have time to think about it, however, since the raft suddenly dropped out from under us again as we crossed over another of those depressions. Daniel was slightly more prepared for it to happen this time, although once again I reached out for him, but this time I merely grabbed on to the collar of his life jacket to make sure he stayed in the raft.

Once I knew that he was safe, I started paddling furiously again as we climbed over the next raised area in the riverbed, and this pattern of dips and humps continued in rapid succession. Daniel gradually seemed to be getting better at handling each time this happened, but I would still reach out in his direction to make sure that he remained in the raft.

As soon as we were out of that section of the river, I started thinking about what had caused the riverbed to be so uneven. Was it caused by the natural process of the river flowing over it? That seemed unlikely, since it only happened in a certain area, so what had caused it. Could humans or animals have been responsible for the uneven terrain, or possibly very strong winds during the dry season? However, I didn’t have long to think about it, since I spotted another interesting sight.

As I continued paddling, I noticed the riverbank on my side of the raft was covered in a plethora of the large rocks. I wasn’t sure if this had happened naturally, as the current pushed them in that direction, or if people had taken the rocks out of the riverbed during the dry season and tossed them onto the bank. Either way, I did my best to make sure the raft was kept far away from that area as I fought against the current and navigated around the bend in the river.

We encountered another set of rapids before we were done, and this section was nearly identical to the last set of rapids, which meant there were a few bumps along the way. After we worked our way through this area, we merely followed the winding path of the river until we reached the pick-up location. That’s when we finally met up with the other group again.

“What did you think of this tour?” Pa asked, as soon as we carried the raft to the trailer and fastened it in place.

“It was a lot harder than the other trips, because we didn’t have as many people to do the paddling,” Daniel answered. “My arms are really sore now, since I had to work a lot harder this time. Oh, and Michael had to grab onto my life jacket when we hit that first big dip. When we hit that, it caused me to bounce off my seat and I almost fell out of the raft and into the river.”

“Michael saved me like that last year, and he also kept me from falling down the stairs on one of the tours in the caverns. Now, he’s saved both of us. But this year I didn’t have that problem.”

“That’s probably because you’re taller and heavier this year, and even though you’re younger than Daniel, your body seems to be more solid too, so that makes you heavier than he is.”

“Yeah, maybe, but we had one less person in our raft than you did and I still didn’t have any problems.”

“That’s probably because you got a lot of experience last year and learned how to handle yourself on a raft,” Devin responded. “This is Daniel’s first year, so he lacks the same amount of experience you’ve had.”

“And I had trouble putting my feet like you showed me to help me brace myself,” Daniel pointed out. “There just wasn’t enough room.”

“Yeah, it was tight, but I was able to do it ok.”

“But you didn’t have someone sitting next to you, so you could spread your legs wider to help brace yourself,” I pointed out. “Daniel couldn’t do that, because I was sitting next to him.”

“What did you think of the rapids on this river, compared to the ones we went through on the Colorado River?” Lonny followed, obviously an attempt to distract the boys and end that discussion.

“There’s no comparison,” Devin responded, “since the rapids here also had obstacles to avoid and those unexpected dips. The other trips didn’t have any of those things when we went through the rapids, and we were also on larger rafts with more people.”

“And I’m glad our guide was able to help steer us around most of the rocks that were sticking out of the water,” Dad replied, “but we still had to paddle really hard to avoid a collision.”

“And the place where the river bottom dipped down and then rose up in those last two sets of rapids reminded me of some of the roller coasters I’ve been on before,” I added, “and with basically the same effect.”

“And I’m glad we took this trip, because it gave me a better idea about what Mac and I might encounter if we ever decide to go rafting somewhere else,” Devin followed. “I can’t imagine what it would be like to go rafting through the Grand Canyon in the spring when the river is higher, due to the melting snow.”

“I’ve spoken with the other guide,” our old guide stated, “and we agree that you all did very well today. You’re right, this was a lot harder than the other tours you’ve been on and I’m glad you didn’t have any serious problems out there today.”

“And I was told,” the other guide began, “that this was the first rafting vacation for the youngest member on the raft with me. Other than the one time that he nearly got bounced out of the raft, he did very well for only having only been on a couple of previous tours. I was also impressed with how the other young man reacted so quickly when that happened and kept the other boy in the raft.”

Daniel face started to turn red when our guide was talking about him.

“Yes, he did really well when he wasn’t being bounced into the air,” I teased as I tousled Daniel’s hair.

After we finished this conversation, we got in the van and buckled up for the ride back to the outfitters.

“I thought doing that was really fun,” Clint stated during the ride, “but like Daniel, my arms are sore too.”

“In that case,” Pa responded, “when we get back to the outfitters, I’ll buy each of you a bottle of water out of the vending machine. You can drink that and it will help to rehydrate your body and flush out some of the waste products, such as lactic acid. It will also reduce the inflammation that causes the soreness in your muscles.”

“And as soon as we get back to the motel,” Dad followed, “I want all of you to dry off and get changed so we can go out for lunch. You’ll be able to drink more water with your meal, if you’re still sore.”

When we reached the outfitters, we carried the rafts up to the building and set them down in front of the overhead doors leading into that area, and then we went inside and turned in our life jackets and helmets. After that, Pa got a couple of bottles of water out of the vending machine for Clint and Daniel and told them they could drink it in the SUV as we were heading back to the motel.

When we got back to the Quality Inn, we saw Lonny’s car in the parking lot, so we knew Ma and Mom were there as well, so we all went to our rooms to dry off and change. When we came out again a short time later, Mom handed Lonny the key to his car and thanked him again for letting them use it, and then we headed out to get some lunch. This time they took us to an Italian restaurant to eat.

“We’ll order three pizzas with different toppings, and then you can take slices from whichever pizza you want. We’ll get everyone a side salad as well, and after we’ve finished eating, we’ll return to the motel to get ready for our next rafting adventure.”

“That will be the Double Shoshone trip, right?” Clint asked.

“Yes, that’s the trip we’ll be taking this time,” Dad confirmed.

“How does that work, since there’s only one rapid with that name?”

“The van will drop us off above the rapids for the first trip through the rapids. If you remember, there’s a park a short way past the rapids and that’s where we’ll end the first leg of the trip. We’ll then have to load the raft on the trailer again, because the van should be waiting there for us. The driver will then take us back above the rapids so we can make a second run through there, since those are the most challenging rapids on this part of the river. Seeing we’re doing it twice this time, it might prove to be even more challenging than the outing we were on this morning.”

“I doubt that will happen! But thanks for answering my question, cuz I wasn’t sure how we could go through those rapids twice.”

When we returned to the motel, we had a short time that we could sit and relax for a while before we had to put on our wetsuits and return to the outfitters again. During that time, I kept checking my phone to see what time it was, because I didn’t want to hold up the others.

“Are you boys ready to go?” she asked when she called my phone.

“Yes, we finished getting ready ten minutes ago,” I told her as I grinned inwardly.

“All of you?”

“Yes, we’re all in our wetsuits and ready to head out,” I confirmed.

“Ok, then we’ll meet you in the hallway in about ten minutes.”

“You mean you guys aren’t ready yet?”

“We’re nearly ready, and I just called to remind you boys to get a move on if you hadn’t started getting ready yet, but you beat me to the punch.”

“Ok, then we’ll meet you out in the hallway in ten minutes.”

We were in the hallway waiting for our parents when they came out of their rooms, and then we walked out to the vehicles together. As soon as we were all buckled in, we headed out to take part in this next adventure.

We followed the same routine as each of the other times and we were soon unloading the raft in the area above Shoshone Rapids. It proved to be fun, yet not quite as challenging as our morning trip, and then we disembarked when we reached the park. After carrying the raft and loading it on the trailer, we got back in the van and rode to the same launch point to start over again. This time the trip through the rapids was just as exciting, and most of us were pretty tired from the combined effects of the two trips. It’s also our last trip with Blue Sky Rafting.

After we returned to the outfitters, Dad asked our guide one final question. “Would it be all right if we kept the wetsuits and booties, because we’re going to do some more rafting, and then we’ll return everything on Sunday morning, if you’re open.”

“Yes, you can rent those items for the extra three days or you can buy the wetsuits, if that would be easier.”

“I think we’ll just rent them for three more days,” Dad replied, and then he went to sign a receipt for the additional three-day rentals.

When we left there, we returned to the motel to dry off and change so we could go out for supper. We agreed to try a different restaurant this time, and while we were eating, Dad directed a comment to me.

“We don’t have any trips scheduled for tomorrow, so I thought you might want to take the other three and spend the day at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.”

“Yes, that’s an excellent idea,” I quickly agreed, and I could hear Clint and Daniel whooping it up behind me. “Aren’t the rest of you coming with us?”

“No, I thought I’d let you take the SUV, because we don’t want to do that again. We just thought Clint and Daniel might like to go there and that you and Devin could take them.”

“Yes, we want to do that!” Clint and Daniel shouted in unison.

“Mike, why don’t I let them take my car instead, since there are just four of them. That way, we can load up our luggage in the SUV and take everything to whatever accommodations we get at the next location for the remainder of our stay. We can just tell them to meet us at Yesterdays for supper when they return.”

“Ok, that sounds like a good idea and we won’t be crowded making that drive to Silverthorne with the SUV.”

“Thanks for letting us do this,” I told our parents collectively after they’d finished their discussion. “And thanks for letting us use your car, Lonny.”

“Hell, you’re taking my son and his boyfriend, so I felt I should at least do something to help you when you do this.”

“And put everything on your debit card and I’ll reimburse you later,” Dad added.

“That won’t be necessary. I think Devin and I can cover doing this, since you guys have been paying for everything else.”

“Wow, I hope my son remembers your wonderful example about doing this when he gets older,” Lonny offered with a grin.

“He’s a good kid, so I don’t think you’ll have to worry.”

After we finished eating, we went back to the motel, and the first thing I did was to use my phone to find out the hours at the amusement park for this time of year. I was glad I did it too, because the hours are reduced this early in the season, especially since we’re going on a weekday, and not on the weekend, so I told the others what I discovered.

“The amusement park and the caverns are only open from 10:00 to 5:00, so do you think we should only go to the amusement park, or do you want to do one of the cavern tours as well?”

“Daniel, have you ever been in any caverns before?” Clint asked.

“No, unless my parents took me to some when I was younger and I just don’t remember it.”

“Then I think we should take him on the Fairy Caves Tour, because that’s the best one,” Clint stated.

“Ok, we can do that after we eat lunch, rather than immediately going back on the rides. The tour takes less than an hour and it will give our meals a chance to settle, so we don’t puke on each other when we go back on the thrill rides.”

“Sounds good to me,” Daniel confirmed.

“Ok, and I know we won’t have to rush around in the morning to get there on time, but we’ll still have to get up early to go out for breakfast with our parents. After we eat, we’ll have some time to do other things before we head to the park. Once we get there, we’ll be doing a lot of walking and running around, so I still think we should get plenty of sleep tonight, because I don’t want you two to start getting tired out before it’s time to leave.”

“I don’t think we’ll get tired out while we’re there,” Clint responded, “but I agree that we should prob’ly get plenty of rest.”

“Good, so who’s going to shower first?”

“We will,” Daniel quickly stated, and then both of them began to hurriedly get undressed.

As soon as they were naked, they paraded around briefly before entering the bathroom, and once the door closed behind them, I turned to Devin and spoke.

“You don’t have a problem with me telling Dad that we’d pay for this, do you?”

“Hell no, that was fine. It’s not like we’re broke, well at least not for much longer.”

“And I don’t expect those two will cause us any problems for us.”

“Nah, they’ll probably stick to us like glue and do everything we tell them.”

“At least this time we won’t have Atsa staring at us while we’re on the rides.”

“And I hope there’s no other evil skinwalker lurking around and watching us either, because I’m not sure how we’d explain it to Clint and Daniel if they spotted it too.”

“Yes, that would definitely not be good.”

When that pair came out of the bathroom, Devin and I undressed and went in to shower next, and when we finished, we sat and chatted with the other pair for a short time before we turned in. Tomorrow should be a fun day, just in a different way from how the past few days have been fun.
