Figuring out your sexuality is often fraught with insecurities. Nobody really wants to be different than "everybody" else. For boys (and sometimes men) to accept that they are somehow different, is a very scary proposition. While Milo doesn't quite understand his attraction to Estevo, a newly hired handyman, he does understand that he is somehow in competition with his cousin, Corinth, for Estevo's affections.
