From the Previous Chapter:
He knew that he had the next two days to relax before the big party of the year, the New Year’s Eve Party. He was anxious for the party to begin, and then when it is over, he’d be taking another long trip with his intended.
Ken Thomas could fell his tiredness from the trip the long flight and the rest of the day. So, he turned off the lights and then got under the covers and it wasn’t long before he fell asleep.
With the owner of The Cove finally falling asleep, the other residents and their guests had already fallen asleep and everyone slept well that night. The Cove was peaceful and quiet throughout the night.
Even though he had intended to sleep in, Ken Thomas was up almost at his usual time for a Saturday. Then, once up, he decided it wasn’t productive to stay in bed and just think about the coming day, so he went and got ready for his day.
After taking his shower and getting dressed, the owner of The Cove headed out to the Kitchen Nook. He’d forgotten that Momma would be there that morning and upon seeing her he said good morning to the woman, and then he sat down his usual seat at the Nook’s table.
Momma immediately brought over his favorite coffee cup and then filled it with the hot brew. Mr. Ken blew on the top of the hot fluid and then after taking a sip of the hot deep brown fluid, he raised it up to Momma in his way of thanking the woman for taking such good care of him.
Mr. Ken then attacked the morning newspaper by getting it out of the protective sleeve and then separating it before starting to read from Section A, World News.
The man was almost finished reading Section B, Local News, when Kate came into the Nook. The couple hugged one another and then they kissed. Kate then sat down in the seat on the corner of the table next to her fiancé.
Momma watched the couple as they held hands, while her employer tried to continue reading the newspaper. It was comical to her that the man was trying to do what he always did in the morning and his honey was trying to get him to focus on her. She eventually went over and refreshed both cups of coffee, which broke up the hand holding, but it didn’t deter Mr. Ken from wanting to continue reading the paper.
While the couple was sitting at the table, Edith came into the Nook. Ken said good morning to his future mother-in-law, and then went back to reading the rest of the paper.
Momma brought over a fresh coffee cup and then filled it with the hot coffee. Edith blew on the hot fluid knowing it was that way from the heat that came through the coffee cup. The older woman finally took a sip and then she thanked Momma for getting the morning drink to her.
Kate and her mother then talked at how engrossed Ken was in the morning paper. He heard their conversation and he replied, while still looking at the newspaper, by saying that he hadn’t gotten a chance to read a paper in four days, and that he was trying to get caught up on what was happening around the world and locally.
The two women laughed at this response, and Kate said that she would leave him alone for a little while, and then chuckled at what she said. Edith just smiled at what her daughter said.
The boys began to arrive in the Kitchen Nook. First to arrive were Phillip and Jessy. They both said good morning, but Phillip addressed his ‘dad’ first and then went to fix Chief her first meal of the day, while Jessy went to his mom and hugged her and then got a kiss back in return.
Matthew, Rusty and Sarge arrived next, with Matthew going on to feed Sarge, but was interrupted by Jessy who wanted to do it. Rusty said good morning to his mom and grandmother and he received kisses from them both. Jessy had fed the two resident pets before, so he knew what he was doing as he cleaned the younger pet’s bowls and then filled one with fresh kibble and the other with fresh water and ice.
Sarge had watched Jessy fix his first meal of the day, and after the young boy had finished preparing everything, Sarge took a drink of the ice-cold water and then went over to the boy and gave him a few cold and wet doggie kisses. Jessy giggled, but he relished the contact, as he wanted a dog of his own for the longest time.
The rest of the boys had arrived while Sarge had given Jessy some cold and wet kisses. The young boy then had the resident pup get on his back, and the young boy gave him a belly rub, which Sarge thoroughly loved.
With Momma seeing that everyone was there, she asked them all to head into the Dining Room. Mr. Ken then helped her by shooing everyone into the Dining Room, so Momma could bring them their breakfast.
While everyone was enjoying their Momma breakfast, ‘dad’ Ken asked the boys to remind their friends while they are there today that he would be having the New Year’s Swim, as he’s had ever since Robert first came to live with him. He explained for them to tell their friends that they will serve the leftover foods from the New Year’s Eve Party, and that they could arrive at twelve noon, as always.
Robert just smiled at the mention of his name. Darrin spoke up and said that he didn’t realize that his ‘brother’ had been living there all this time. Charles spoke up and said that he arrived around the 4th of July, about six months after his brother had.
Hearing that surprised Darrin and he asked, “Mr. Ken … so … so, it sounds like … like you’ve been helping foster kids for what … for five or six years?” And the teen let the question hang out there with everyone waiting for the man to answer.
Mr. Ken smiled at the question, and then he decided he needed to answer Darrin’s inquiry. “Yes, Darrin … I’ve been working with DPS for over six years. It began with my finding Collin out on the Patio during a very severe storm. And then after he went to live with his grandmother, Robert … he came into my life about two years later. Then there was Charles at the 4th of July.
“Then around Labor day, that same year, the twins … they came to live here after the entire family was involved in a very serious accident. Matthew … well, he joined us here at The Cove later in the fall. Billy, he came to us around Easter time the following year. After him was Mark that summer. Then this past April, Phillip … he joined us and you came to us in October. So, yes, I’ve been helping foster boys. Oh, I forgot … I did have one foster girl. Her name was Caroline. She didn’t last the week due to her outlandish behavior.”
Hearing that Ken had one foster girl surprised Kate and she wanted to know more, but knew that was not the time, nor the place, to ask, since the girl didn’t last very long. She was very curious, though, as to why she was gone so quickly.
Darrin thanked his foster dad for telling him about when all of his ‘brothers’ came to live at The Cove. He added that he was one of the lucky ones to be brought there, since here are thousands of kids in the DPS system, who could have been sent there instead of him.
While the boys went up to take their showers, Kate talked to Ken. She asked him about Caroline and what happened that she was there less than a week.
Ken wondered, after he mentioned the girls name, if she would want to know about the only girl who was brought to The Cove to be fostered, but was sent away soon thereafter.
“Kate … Caroline … she was a thirteen-year-old going on thirty. The short of it was that she … that Caroline … she tried to have sex with some of the boys. It was when she was found to have one of the boy’s underwear off when one of the other boys saw it that I made the decision to have Ms. Judy remove her from the house that day.
“She had done other things leading up to that, though. The boys went swimming, and Caroline … well, she decided to join them. But she didn’t have a swimsuit yet, so she decided to … she swam in only her bra and panties that … well, they became transparent when wet.
“She also didn’t like the rules and she felt that she should have more freedom around the house. And she felt she should be treated differently because she felt that because she already had sex with other boys at other foster houses, she was already a woman. It was a nightmare, Kate, to have her here. She disrupted the whole house routine. I don’t know what else I can tell you about her,” finished Ken.
Kate hugged her future husband and told him how sorry she was that he had to put up with a young girl like that. She then asked him if that was why there never were any other girls brought for him to foster.
Ken was truthful with his intended bride. He told her that after the debacle of having a girl in the house and having to deal with the bedlam that she caused, he told Judy not to ever consider bringing another girl there. Ken also told Kate that he had five boys in the house at the time and having just one girl did not work out for them or him.
Kate asked him what would happen if they have a girl. Ken told her when they have children, she would grow up in the environment with a number of boys around, and the boys would learn to give her the space she deserves being a girl.
Kate then asked him where would her bedroom be and about a bathroom for their little girl.
Ken smiled and told Kate that they would figure it all out when that happens. He told her that they would probably have a year or two to decide what they would do, and then he would make the changes they needed to ensure their little girl had her privacy.
Kate smiled at the answer and hugged him saying that she was glad that he would do that for their little girl. Ken hugged her back and told her that they would figure it all out and the boys would just have to deal with it. Ken then kissed Kate and they hugged a bit more.
When the boys went up for their showers, Rusty and Jessy got in Phillip’s bathroom before Matthew, Phillp and Darrin did, so those three boys would have to wait for them to finish. They were not happy about that, at all. Darrin then decided to get his shower in the boy’s bathroom as he’d done once before.
It took the two younger boys almost fifteen minutes to get their showers and then dressed. When they opened the door, to let their older ‘brothers’ in, Matthew told both boys that because they take too much time showering, they were never to get their shower before their older ‘brothers’ do.
Jessy didn’t like being told that, so he went running to his mother.
“Mom, the older boys … they told us that we have to wait until they get their showers before we do. Why are they being so mean to us?” now cried Jessy.
Kate looked to Ken for some help in resolving the problem. He told her that there are always two sides to the story, and he needed to hear the full story from both before he could decide what was the best course of action.
When the older teens came down, Mr. Ken asked them about which bathroom they used. All the boys told them that they used the boy’s bathroom. But Darrin spoke up and told his foster dad that he only used the boy’s bathroom because Rusty and Jessy took way too long to get their showers and then get dressed.
Kate heard what they had said, but she wanted to know more. She told her fiancé that she wanted to hear what Rusty had to say. Ken then said that he wanted to hear what Matthew and Phillip had to say, so they had the full story. Kate wasn’t happy that he took that stance.
Right after the older boys came downstairs, Rusty came down and Kate called him into the Study and asked him what happened with the them taking their showers. Rusty told his mother that Matthew yelled at them because they took too much time taking their showers, and that they now had to wait until they took theirs first. Kate was still unhappy about that whole situation.
Not too long after Rusty came down, Matthew and Phillip came down from their showers and Mr. Ken called them into the Study.
“Boys … Rusty and Jessy … they told us that they have to wait to take their showers. And that Matthew … that you yelled at them that they have to wait until you get yours first. Can you tell me what this is all about?” ‘dad’ Ken had asked the two Cover boys.
Matthew wasn’t happy that the two younger boys went and told. But he knew that he was in the right, so he told his ‘dad’, “‘Dad’… the boys, Rusty and Jessy … they take too long to get their showers and then get dressed. It takes them about fifteen minutes.
“I told them the other day that we’ll take our showers first because they take too long. But today they rushed up there, so we had to WAIT!”
“Yea, ‘dad’,” spoke up Phillip, “they knew we don’t take as long as they do. But for whatever reason they want to delay us, so they can do whatever in the fifteen minutes they take. What are they doing in there that long? We take about 7 to 8 minutes, which includes brushing our teeth, then putting on our deodorant and fresh underwear, and they know it.”
“Let them go back to getting their showers in their mom’s room,” added Matthew.
Kate spoke up and said the two older boys, “Jessy … he said that you yelled at them.”
Matthew quickly spoke up, since he was the one who spoke to the boys after they finally got out of the bathroom. “No, ma’am, I did not yell at them. I did what ‘dad’ does when he wants to make a point. I raised my voice to get their attention and then … and then I told them that from now on they’ll take their showers after we do.”
Jessy quickly said, “Well, it sure sound like you were yelling.”
Kate looked at Rusty. “Son, is it true you … that and your brother … that you take a very long time to get your showers?” And before Rusty could answer, Kate further asked, “Did your big ‘brothers’ tell you that they would take their showers first, because you two take too long?”
Rusty was about to burst out in tears, because his mother wasn’t standing up for him and Jessy. But he did tell his mother than his big ‘brothers’ did tell them that they would shower first because they took so long. But then he argued why should they go first?
Mr. Ken spoke up right then and told the boy, “Rusty … it’s not so much as who goes first … it’s … it’s who delays the other. If you and your brother … if you only took 7 or 8 minutes, then your big ‘brothers’ … they wouldn’t be so upset. But I’ll bet … I bet they told you why they wanted to go first, but you two … you decided to go before them anyway and cause this … this brouhaha.”
“Brouhaha … what … what’s that?” asked Jessy.
Ken smiled at the young boy and told him that a brouhaha was an overexcited reaction to something, or commotion, which is what this is. The man wanted to ask them why it took them so long, but he didn’t want to start something else with Kate sitting there.
“Boys,” began Kate, “I don’t know what takes you so long, because … well, when you take your showers in my room, you’re in and out. So, I think … I think it is best that you allow your big ‘brothers’ to go first and then … and then you can take all the time you want. We’ll be home next week, so having to let your big ‘brothers’ go first the next two days won’t hurt you. You OK with that you two?”
Jessy looked at Rusty, who nodded his head and then he told his mom that they’ll let their big ‘brothers’ go first from now on. Even Jessy said that he’d abide by that.
‘Dad’ Ken asked Matthew and Phillip if that was acceptable to them. They both said that it will work out better this way.
Matthew and Phillip joined their ‘brothers’ up at the Pavilion, but Rusty and Jessy didn’t follow.
When the two Covers arrived at the Pavilion, Darrin asked them why it took them so long. Phillip looked to Matthew to tell him what happened.
“Our younger ‘brothers,’” began Matthew, “they complained that I yelled at them for taking too long to take their showers. So, ‘dad’ and Ms. Kate … they wanted to talk to us to find out what really happened. In the end … it was greed from now on Rusty and Jessy … that they will take their showers after we do.”
Darrin was glad to hear that as he knew how long the boys took to get their showers and then get dressed afterwards in the bathroom. The teen asked his ‘brothers’ if they thought that Ms. Kate would cause trouble for them. Phillip said that he didn’t think so, as she was not mad or anything, but just wanting to know what happened.
The Cover’s friends began arriving and the questions from Darrin’s friends was how did he like his first trip to Mr. Ken’s amusement parks.
Darrin stated out telling his friends about his first airplane flight and being able to feel like he was flying the plane for a few minutes. He added that his ‘brothers’ said that they all got the chance to do that, but that he was going to believe it until he did it as well. The smile on Darrin’s face told all of his friends that he had a great time just doing that.
The teen’s friends then bugged him to tell him all about the parks and what he got to do at them, and how much fun was it.
Darrin began his tale by saying that he’d never stayed at any hotel like the ones they did. The Cover told his friends that one night he stayed with Matthew in Mr. Wayne’s room, but that he got to stay in the teenager’s room, with three of his other ‘brothers’ the next two nights.
Darrin’s friends then asked him to tell them what he thought about the amusement parks.
Darrin told them that the first park, Fantasy Fun, looked like it had been there for a long time. But the rides were fun and the park was clean, especially the rest rooms. The teen mentioned that they all smelled freshly cleaned, like they knew they were coming there.
Darrin told the boys that their first ride was the Galleon, a pirate ship that swung back-and forth. He told them that they then rode the Scramble and after that the Tilt-A-Whirl.
The teen Cover told them that Mr. Ken got them all Fastest Passes, so when it came time to ride the wooden roller coaster, The Comet, they took up the first two cars then they went up the 110-foot first hill of the out-and-back coaster.
Darrin then told them about how he rode the Octopus, the Looper, a steel coaster, then the Superflyer that made you feel like you were flying, and lastly the Tomahawk that went over the top, meaning the ride went in a full circle in one direction and then the other.
While Darrin continued to tell his friends about Mountain Top and Discovery Kingdom, Rusty and Jessy came up to the Pavilion looking for Matthew and Phillip.
When the two younger boys found their big ‘brothers’ they went over to them and they apologized to them for getting them in trouble. Jessy hugged Matthew and cried that he told his mother that he yelled at him and he hoped that he would forgive him.
Matthew hugged the eight-year-old back and told him that everything was alright. Rusty then went over to Phillip and hugged him and told him that they didn’t mean to take so much time getting their showers. The almost ten-year-old told him that their mom always made them hurry up when they got to take their showers, but without her around they wanted to enjoy the hot water and loads of it.
The four ‘brothers’ had a group hug and the older Cover boys saw it. The three older teens went over to them to find out what happened. Rusty quickly told them about the long showers and getting Matthew and Phillip in trouble. The group hug just got bigger.
During the barbeque, Mr. Ken, Ms. Kate and Ms. Edith came up for a burned bacon cheeseburger with all the fixings. They listened to Darrin as he talked about his experiences at the parks. Mr. Ken was happy the way the teen was explaining his experiences and how much he loved the parks.
The foster dad heard how the teen told his friends about how clean the parks were and how nice it was to have Fastest Passes, so they didn’t have to wait in line. The man the enthusiasm Darrin was telling about riding the different wild mouse coasters, and the bigger wooden coasters where some were higher than others.
Kate watched for her two boys. She was concerned about them and the little spat they had with Matthew and Phillip. As she looked around, she saw that they were sitting with their two big ‘brothers’ and they were laughing about something.
Kate nudged Ken to shown him what was happening between her boys, Rusty and Jessy, their older ‘brothers’, Matthew and Phillip. The couple smiled and they told one another they were thankful that the four had made up, and there was no bad blood between them.
As Darrin was explaining his trip, his friends were telling him that his trip sounded like the videos took last summer of the parks. Darrin told them that was because he went to those same parks and they should be the same. Everyone laughed.
While just about everyone was still eating, Mr. Ken got the boys attention and told them about the New Year’s Day Swim. He told the boys who’d never been to one, that they eat the leftover foods from the New Year’s Eve Party, the night before, and that it was held inside the house and that everyone would swim instead of coming up to the Pavilion. He told them if they could to come over at noon, as they usually do.
After the boy’s friends left for the day, ‘dad’ Ken told them that they would-be going out to dinner, but he just didn’t know where, so he asked for suggestions.
Charles spoke up and asked that they don’t go to any place over at Four Corners. The teenager said that they always go there and with company they should try something different.
Robert then spoke up and recommended Fuddruckers. Darrin asked what was Fuddruckers. Charles told his ‘brother’ that it was a hamburger place where they cook your burger to order and then you added the toppings from a huge display. He added that they also offered fries, but their onion rings were awesome.
Phillip then mentioned breakfast for dinner at IHOP. His ‘brothers’ laughed, but ‘dad’ Ken said that there was nothing wrong with having breakfast for dinner, and that he really likes that restaurant.
Matthew spoke up and asked if they could go to that pizza place that had the games in the back. Hearing there was games in the back made Rusty and Jessy vote to go there. More laughter from everyone.
“Edith … well, you heard where the boys would like to go. So, is there any place that you’d go to?” asked Ken
The older woman thought for a moment, then she offered, “Well, I can understand why the boys … why they don’t want to go where they usually get to eat, so often. So, I’m not against going to any of the places the boys recommended. Let me ask the boys about that pizza place.”
“Boys, besides pizza, what else do they have?” asked Edith.
Billy addressed the question and told the woman that they had a nice salad and baked potato bar and a few other hot items, but nothing like you’d find at a sit-down place.
Edith then told her future son-in-law that they all sounded really good, but she knew that her grandsons would like the pizza and to play some games, so she voted to go to Mr. Gatti’s Pizza.
Lots of cheering was heard from all the boys with that decision made. So, ‘dad’ Ken told everyone to go and wash their hands, up to their elbows, and use the facility while they there, and that they should all meet in the garage in ten minutes.
The Sprinter Van easily held all twelve people and it wasn’t too long after they left The Cove before they were entering Mr. Gatti’s.
‘Dad’ Ken had his black American Express Credit Card out and was ready to pay for all twelve people in his party. Kate watched as her fiancé paid the $146 and change bill, as he then smiled at her, while he put the receipt into the wallet.
The boys hurried to get their plates full of pizza and then their drinks. Billy took Rusty in hand while Phillip took Jessy to the pizza bar to get their plates full first and then the four got their drinks before Billy and Phillip went back to get their plates of pizza.
The four adults waited until all the boys had their plates of pizza or mac and cheese and were seated together in a corner booth. They then went and got some salad off the well-appointed bar and Edith got herself a baked-potato and topped it with sour cream, shredded cheese and bacon bits. Collin and Mr. Ken got some pizza along with their salads. The four then claimed a table close to the boys and then they went and got their drinks.
The banter from the boy’s corner was loud, as they talked over one another. Of course, Rusty and Jessy wanted to know what kind of games they had in the back area. Matthew told them there were games that they could play by themselves and a few they needed someone to play with them.
The teen Cover told they could ride the carousel, the Frog Hopper, or the round bumper cars that could spin in a circle, so you could change direction fast. Charles added that could also play some skill games like basketball, skeeball, car racing, air hockey and a shooting range. The two youngsters were now anxious to go and try them.
Kate though had other plans, as she didn’t think her sons had eaten any salad, so she had them get a small one to satisfy her. It also let the adults get something else off the buffet to satisfy their hunger.
When the boys were finished eating all they could, Robert went to his dad and asked him to buy them the playing cards they needed to play the games. ‘Dad’ Ken smiled at Kate and told her that he’d be right back.
When ‘dad’ Ken went to the cashier to buy the game cars, he learned they now had $15.00 cards along with the $10.00 cards they used to get. So, the man bought nine $15.00 cards, which would give all the boys, and Collin the chance to play the arcade games in the back room. ‘Dad’ Ken then passed the card out to all the boys and they hurried to the back to begin playing.
“Oh, Collin,” began Mr. Ken as he sat down, “I got you a game card too. I’ll bet your little ‘brothers’ would want to play against their big ‘brother, so go and have fun too,” teased the junior college man’s Big Bro.
As Collin got up, he thanked his Big Bro and then he walked to the back room. Kate reached over and grabbed Ken’ s hand and told him that he is a very generous person, and she was very happy that she was going to marry him. Ken told her, “What good is having money if you don’t spend it, especially if you are going to spoil a bunch of kids.” Ken then smiled at his bride-to-be.
On the ride home, Jessy was telling his mom how when he bumped all of his ‘brothers’ on the bumper-car ride, that when he did, he bounced back off them. He told her that was fun to do as you don’t bounce back on Bumper Car ride at Mr. Ken’s parks. Kate and Ken laughed at the boy’s tale.
All of the boys talked about their game play at Mr. Gatti’s, and how they beat one another. Even Collin got into the story telling about how his ‘brothers’ cheated when they played against him on air-hockey. He told how it was two against one and they would sort of slip onto the side of the table some, to get to the puck sooner. More laughter within the van.
The one good story that the older boys told the adults was that they gave all of their prize tickets to their younger ‘brothers’. Kate said that she wondered where her sons got the small toys they had when they came out to the van. ‘Dad’ Ken thanked his ‘boys’ for doing that for Rusty and Jessy and he told them that was the mark of a caring and kind-hearted person and that it would pay them well in their adult years.
There were more stories about the arcade games, as they drove along and before long the group returned to The Cove.
‘Dad’ Ken held a quick meeting in the MRS Room before sending the boys up to their rooms. He told them that tomorrow their friends needed to leave by three o’clock and that they definitely needed to rest before the New Year’s Eve Party, as it would last until well after midnight.
The four adults decided to talk there in the MRS Room, with the reason being Edith saying that the room seemed to be a waste if no one ever used it. So, the four sat there talking about what the women could expect at the party.
Ken told them both that his guests wouldn’t arrive until eight o’clock, or after, even though the party began much earlier. He did mention that there would be many people who had lofty positions in local and state governments and that he has invited the two state senators and the Attorney General.
Ken told them that he’s already had the Governor and Lieutenant Governor at his New Year’s Eve Party and he is curious as to whom will show. He laughed when he said that it would be great to have all three there tomorrow night.
Ken then told them that all of the high school students who participated in the decorating contest and their advisors, along with their guest, will also be there. He told them that they would also have their own New Year’s Eve Party out in the four-car garage with their own band and the higher-ranking political invitee will help him in announcing the winner of the decorating contest at around ten o’clock.
As they talked, Kate asked Ken what time did the fireworks go off. Her fiancé told her that the fireworks barge would begin setting them off at the stroke of midnight. He then asked her, with a wink, to make sure they were together at the stroke of midnight.
Edith took that time to decide to go up to bed. She told them all to have a good night and she went over to the elevator and took it up to the second floor. Collin took the opportunity to tell the couple that he was going to go up to his room with Bill, and that he’d see his Big Bro when he visits his foster son.
ow alone, the couple snuggled there in the MRS Room. They talked about the night and how much her sons really enjoyed having their big ‘brothers’ there to play with them. Kate was so happy that she was marrying Ken, and that her sons would have so many big ‘brothers’ to help them grow up and be just like them.
The two shared a few kisses before Ken told Kate that he needed to go up and say good night to the boys. He asked her to join him, but Kate told her that it was a man’s thing and she would only change the dynamics of that special time with his ‘boys’.
Ken walked Kate to her room and the two shared a few more hugs and kisses before Kate went into her room. Ken then headed to Billy’s room.
‘Dad’ Ken didn’t spend much time with any of the boys that night. He told them all to have a good night’s sleep before he headed down to his own retreat.
After getting himself ready for bed, Ken Thomas sat on the edge of his king-sized bed thinking of what has happened over the last number of days with Kate and her family there, and he wondered what will happen in the days to come.
The man lamented that Kate and family would be leaving him on the day they visited Chrystal Lake. He wasn’t looking forward to that date, but what he was looking forward to was the day he would make Kate his wife.
Mr. Ken then turned off the lights in his bedroom, and he then crawled under the covers. It wasn’t long before the sandman visited him and he was soon fast asleep. The rest of The Cove was asleep by the time the owner of The Cove was and with that the house was peaceful and quiet throughout the night.
