From the Previous Chapter:

In Phillip’s room the two didn’t talk too much. Phillip did tell his ‘dad’ that he didn’t even think about using his computer to find band names, and he apologized for not thinking about doing that. ‘Dad’ Ken told the young Cover that he shouldn’t beat himself up about it because that is why they are born small and given the opportunity to learn as they grow up, and this was one of those learning opportunities.

Phillip smiled at hearing what his ‘dad’ illustrated to him and knew what he was trying to do by giving him that sort of pep talk. They soon hugged and offered one another a goodnight and then Mr. Ken headed to his retreat, while the young Cover went to use his bathroom before going to bed. Chief was still staying with her young pups down in the Great Room so, again, Phillip was the lone occupant in his bedroom that night.

Wednesday morning Momma Maria had Mr. Ken’s hot coffee and morning newspaper ready for when he entered the Nook and sat down for his breakfast.

“Good morning, Momma,” offered Mr. Ken, as he entered the Kitchen Nook and then sat down.

“Goods mornings, to youse toos, misters Kens,” called back Momma, as she came over to pour her employer his first cup of hot coffee.

It wasn’t too long before Matthew and Phillip came down for their breakfast and they too offered a good morning to their ‘dad’ and Momma Maria. Phillip, before he sat down, fixed Chief’s fresh kibble and water, who then quickly ate and then headed back down to her brood.

It was while they were eating their breakfast that Phillip asked his ‘dad’ if he would think about letting his friends go with everyone to either Six Flags, or SeaWorld, when his ‘brothers’ went. That question surprised Matthew and he asked what that was all about.

Phillip told his ‘brother’ that he might be on his three-day trip that weekend and that he’d told their ‘dad’ that he felt that it wasn’t fair that his friends couldn’t go just because he wasn’t there.

Matthew asked his ‘dad’ if he wasn’t going to allow Phillip’s friends to go to the amusement parks when they all went over the three-day weekend. All ‘dad’ Ken would promise was that he was going to think about that and since he was just asked about that last night, and he hadn’t had too much time to consider it. The boys knew, from experience, not to press the issue right then.

Not long after the younger boys left for school, the older teens came down for breakfast. As the teens ate, Robert asked his dad if he would think about them going to the football game, and if he decided to let them go to text them, and then they could start making plans.

‘Dad’ Ken abruptly put down his paper and asked, “What is it with you boys this morning? First Phillip … he pestered me about something he only asked me about last night, and now you three … you are at it too! I can’t do anything about what you all want until I have time to consider it, and I was asleep most of the night.” With that said the man put the newspaper back up to his face and continued to read.

The teens just looked at one another and they didn’t say a thing. They continued to eat their breakfast and when they were finished, they used the half-bath and then headed up the rise to go outside the Main Gate to catch the school bus.

As the teenagers walked up to the bus stop, they talked amongst themselves about what their ‘dad’ said to them in the Kitchen Nook. Robert vented that he couldn’t ever remember his dad ever acting that way. Charles agreed that their dad was never that testy, and wondered what brought that on.

It was Billy who speculated that with Phil and them wanting him to give them the answers they were looking for right away, and without giving him the time to find, or even formulate the answers, he just wanted them to know that they have to give him that time.

The oldest Cover teen suggested they give their ‘dad’ the space he needs to be a ‘dad’ and not press him for answers right away, and that they needed to get to their youngest ‘brother’ right after they get home from school and give him the 411. Robert and Charles agreed with Billy. as they loaded onto their school bus.

Momma Maria had seen what happened in the Kitchen Nook that morning and wondered what that was all about. She’d never seen, or heard, that sort of exchange between her boss and the boys before. But being a woman; she was curious.

“Misters Kens … ahhh … iss theres somethings wrongs betweens youse and thesis boys?” asked Momma Maria.

“Oh, that” started Ken Thomas, who was caught off guard by Momma’s question, “not really. They just asked me some questions last night, and you heard them ask me about them again. I … I just haven’t had time to research what they want me to do for them and … well, what else can I tell them?” pleaded Mr. Ken, with a smile.

By then Wayne had come to work and had gotten a cup of coffee before he would feed the pups. He heard the simple exchange between his boss and Momma and wondered what that was all about, so he asked.

Mr. Ken told him that last night Phillip asked if his friends could go to the amusement park when his brothers’ go, if he was on his three-day trip and wouldn’t be there. The Estate Master’s employer added that his older ‘boys’ had earlier asked if they could go to the away football game that Friday, and then this morning, they all had asked him again about what they asked just earlier last night. Mr. Ken continued and told Wayne that he was a bit abrupt with the teenagers when he responded to them, and that Momma was a bit concerned there was something going on between him and them.

Wayne just chuckled at hearing the story and continued to drink his hot coffee. He knew when he would finish that cup, he would fix seven bowls of partially softened gruel. That was so the puppies could use those sharp teeth to get used to breaking up the puppy food for when they got older, and would have that more solid type of food to eat.

At the high school, the Cover teens talked to their friends and told them their ‘dad’ needed to know who they were going to go to the game with on Friday, before he would decide if they could go. Robert and Charles didn’t have any trouble finding someone to ride with.

It was Billy who had a more difficult time since all of his friends now had part-time jobs. They told him that they didn’t know what their weekend schedules would be until they went to work that night. Billy asked them to text him when they knew, so that way, he could tell Mr. Ken if he had a ride.

As the eighth week after the puppy’s birth came about, Bruce Price called The Cove to ask when he could stop by and chose his two pups. But when the phone rang at The Cove’s desk, Wayne Mitchell answered it and told Mr. Price that Mr. Thomas was at his office.

The Estate Master told the owner of Sully, the sire of the pups, that he would call his employer. and ask him if it would be alright for him to stop by later that evening to choose his two puppies, and he would call him back after he was able to talk to him.

When Wayne called his boss about Bruce Price’s request, Mr. Ken told him he knew that the man would be calling, as it was eight weeks to the day that the puppies were born, and he had told the man that he wouldn’t release them until they had eight weeks of weaning and people play. So, the owner of The Cove told Wayne to have Mr. Price come to The Cove at 4:30 and he would meet him there, so he could select his two pups in payment for Sully’s services.

That afternoon, Mr. Ken came home before Mr. Price arrived, in order to talk to Chief. He wanted to talk to the resident pet about it being time for Sully’s owner to receive two of her pups, as his gift for Sully coming over and helping her create her first family. Mr. Ken also told Chief that on the weekend other people would be coming by to select her other puppies to take them home with them, so they could have a wonderful pet, as she had been him and the boys all these years.

Chief was heartbroken, at first, that she would be losing her family. But Mr. Ken told her that he was keeping one of her pups there at The Cove, so they could have two resident pets and she wouldn’t be lonely during the day, when all the boys were at school.

Chief was happy now that one of her puppies was staying there with her and becoming a part of The Cove, as she had become. She barked out a few, “Woofs’” and then gave her first master a number of doggie kisses.

Mr. Price was on time and the guards let him right into the estate, and told him to drive up to the Foyer entrance, where Mr. Ken was waiting for him. The two men greeted one another and Chief; she was there, too.

The three walked down the stairs to the Great Room and then out to the small corral, where Wayne and Dennis had the seven pups playing. Mr. Ken told Bruce he wanted him to see all seven of Chief’s puppies outside playing, so he could watch them and then select his two. He told the man he hoped he brought carriers for them for when he takes them home.

Bruce Price looked at the man, smiled and said that he never takes a dog anywhere without them being in a dog carrier. The man then watched the seven pups play, and as he did, he asked if the pups had learned any more habits from their mother.

Wayne spoke up and told the man that Chief has them attentive to her, and that they will react to her barking commands and that they will stop what they are doing and look at her. That the pups will sit when she barks a certain way, and that they will also lay down at another barking command. Wayne then added that Chief also has them trained to automatically pee before they go into the house.

Bruce was amazed that the pups were already that well trained, and he asked if he could see that. Wayne and Dennis took the coral away and Wayne asked Chief to get her family to sit. Chief barked and the pups all looked to her, and after another bark the pups all sat. Mr. Ken then asked Chief to have the pups lay down. Chief barked differently this time, and the pups all laid down on the grass.

“Chief … take the pups inside,” somewhat commanded Mr. Ken.

Chief barked again, and began going to the doggie door, and as soon as the pups saw where she was going, they all squatted and peed and then went into the Great Room.

“If I hadn’t seen it; I wouldn’t have believed it,” commented an amazed Bruce Price.

“Now, we haven’t started giving them voice commands,” explained Mr. Ken. “We didn’t want the pups to get used to our voices and then they go off to a new home, and then they have to get used to a new master’s voice. They do know our ‘boys’ voices, as they play with them every day after school. And they may have been trying to teach them some tricks, but with them being so young they may not understand, and not have grasped the concept yet.”

Bruce Price then looked over the seven puppies and chose a male and a female, as he was promised. He thanked Mr. Ken for the two pups and told him that he was going to work with both puppies when he gets them home, and see what else they may be able to learn, since they already have three learned skills.

With his two pups in their carriers, the two men shook hands and Bruce told Ken that if he ever felt that Chief was ready to have another litter not to hesitate to call him, as he was sure that Sully would be happy to come over and play with Chief. The two men, and Chief, then laughed and before long two of Chief’s brood were leaving The Cove.

Mr. Dennis told the boys, when they arrived home from school, that Mr. Price was there to select his two puppies, and that their ‘dad’ asked that they not go down there. The boys were disappointed that they didn’t get to meet the man, but they understood that their arrival would disrupt the men’s discussions, so they stayed away.

Later that night, as they held their after-dinner meeting down in the Great Room, and they were two puppies short, ‘dad’ Ken told the boys that he now had to choose one of the remaining three male pups to stay there at the Cove. The boys all had their favorite, and they all wanted to know what they were going to call the new resident pet.

‘Dad’ Ken told the boys that as Mr. Price watched the pups before choosing his two, that he was also watching them to see which one he would want to keep for The Cove, if the man didn’t take it. The boys started asking if Mr. Price took it.

‘Dad’ Ken didn’t answer them. All he did was get up and go over to Matthew, and gently take the puppy the pre-teen was holding off his lap. The man then happily told the boys that the puppy he was holding was going to be the new resident pet for The Cove.

Initially, the boys all smiled at which puppy their ‘dad’ chose, but then they immediately asked what were they going to call it, and which boy was going to be responsible for taking care of it. All ‘dad’ Ken would tell them was that he wanted to see which boy the puppy would gravitate to over time. And he also asked them to start thinking of a name for the new resident pet.

Matthew then reached for the puppy back. But ‘dad’ Ken kept it when he went to sit back down. And being with a new holder, the puppy began licking at the man’s face. All the boys laughed and Charles commented that his dad might be the new ‘puppy’ master. More laughter came from the boys after that. Even Chief barked out a few “Woofs” in agreement.

Their meeting continued and Robert and Charles told their dad who they would be going to the away football game with, if he allowed them to go. Billy told his foster dad that all of his friends had part-time jobs and none of them had texted him with their weekend schedules, so he didn’t know if he had a ride yet. ‘Dad’ Ken thanked the teenagers for that information, and left it at that.

The man then asked the boys if they had anything they wanted to bring up. Phillip looked around trying to decide if he should ask his question or not. But knowing what his ‘dad’ had done in the past, he decided to ask anyway.

“‘Dad’ … will my friends … will they be getting a coin just like my ‘brothers’ friends had,” asked the young Cover.

‘Dad’ Ken was surprised at the question. However, it was something the boy had asked when he first received his coin, and he hadn’t thought about it anymore.

“Phillip,” began ‘dad’ Ken, “to be honest, I haven’t thought about it. I had my fall meeting and after that I just plain forgot that you had asked me. But to be fair, I will have to talk to all of your friend’s parents, as I did your ‘brothers’ friend’s parents, before I can give them a coin.

“You see, because there are some privacy issues involved, and the parents … they have to give their permission, before I can give out the coins. Then, when I do, your friends … they will have to abide by the same rules I gave you, about not showing it around, and letting other people know what it is, etc. You understand, right?” finished the foster dad.

Phillip acknowledged that he did. However, he asked when his friends might get theirs when he decides to give them one. ‘Dad’ Ken smiled at the boy’s persistence, and told him that it would have to be on a weekend, when he and his friend’s parents weren’t going to be busy. The man stressed to his foster son not to mention this to his friends.

After the boys went up to relax before bed, Wayne thanked his boss for the heads-up on more coins being given out. He then asked if Dennis would ever get one. Ken told Wayne that ever since Dennis came to work at The Cove, he never thought about the coins and, of course, him getting one.

The owner of The Cove conceded that he should have already given his employee one, and that he would remedy that very soon. The Estate Master then decided to leave early that evening, and go over to his apartment, leaving Mr. Ken to go upstairs and say goodnight to the boys by himself.

The man started in Billy’s room, as he usually did, and Billy asked about going to see his mother, again. The foster dad told the teenager that they would definitely need to plan it, as there were a lot more moving parts at The Cove right now. Mr. Ken mentioned that with their wanting to go to either Fiesta Texas, or SeaWorld, his and Phillip’s three-day trip, as well as his need to go back east, plus with the Holidays coming up, he opined that there might not be many weekends available for him to go.

Billy thanked his foster dad for reminding him about all that was already planned, and with that he would look at the calendar and talk with Mr. Wayne and Mr. Chris, to see when they thought it would be a good time that he could go.

Mr. Ken smiled at the way the teen looked at challenges. He then told him that Robert was also looking to visit his mom, and possibly his dad, too, so he might want to coordinate with his ‘brother’, so that way the trips could be planned for the same day.

Billy thanked Mr. Ken for talking with him and the two shared a hug, and then the man walked over to Robert’s room.

In his son’s room, the two talked about Billy’s desire to see his mother again, so the teen’s dad told him if he wanted to do that same thing, then for him to get with his ‘brother’, and for them to try to plan to go on the same day. The man explained the same reason for doing that and Robert told his dad that he would. The two shared a close hug and the teenager thanked his dad for everything he’s done for him, and then the man walked over to his other son’s room

In Charles’ room the father and son didn’t talk about anything special. Although, Charles did ask if they could invite some classmates over again, as they did one time before. The teen’s dad mentioned that his son needed to first talk to his ‘brothers’, and then check the calendar. Dad Ken further explained that with their wanting to go to the amusement park over the three-day weekend, and also a desire to have a sleepover, it might take away two possible weekends to do that.

Charles admitted that he hadn’t thought about those two items that were already being on their radar. With that being said, the teen still asked if they could still plan on doing that, if they could find a way.

Dad Ken smiled at the way his son still wanted to have his other classmates over, like they did once before, so he told his son to try to work it out between his ‘brothers’, Mr. Wayne and Mr. Dennis. The two then hugged and Mr. Ken moved on to Matthew’s room.

In Matthew’s room the pre-teen told his ‘dad’ that it sure was different, with two puppies being gone. The boy then wondered how it will be when the other four get their new homes.

‘Dad’ Ken saw the sadness in the boy’s eyes and face, so he hugged Matthew and told him that with their keeping one of the pups it would be like the other puppies were still with them. Matthew just melted into the hug, as he loved it when the man showed him some special attention because, while living with his mother he never got any hugs from either her, or Lincoln.

In Phillip’s room, ‘dad’ Ken asked the boy if he and Doctor Doug were working on his mom’s leaving him there at The Cove. Phillip confirmed that they talked about his mother, and that Doctor Doug was trying to get him to understand why she left him there.

The boy said that he still wanted to talk to his mom, so he could hear why she did it. ‘Dad’ Ken hugged the boy, and told him that he would get them together one day, but he told the boy that he felt that it was still too soon.

After the young Cover wiped the few tears out of his eyes, he asked his ‘dad’ what they would call their new puppy. ‘Dad’ Ken chuckled at the question, and then told the boy that’s what he and his ‘brothers’ were supposed to be thinking about, and that hopefully tomorrow night they will all pick a name.

Phillip smiled at his ‘dad’ and thanked him for talking to him. The two hugged and the boy held onto the hug longer than he usually did. Mr. Ken felt the boy’s need for the extra-long hug, so he didn’t end it until the youngster was ready to.

When the two pulled away, Phillip looked up to his ‘dad’ and with a few more tears in his eyes he whispered, “Thank you.”

‘Dad’ Ken saw the tears and upon hearing the way the boy softly spoke the words he knew Phillip needed another hug, so he pulled the boy back to him, and when he did the boy broke out in more tears.

All of the young Cover’s ‘brothers’ heard his outburst, and they came to see why he was crying.

When they asked, all ‘dad’ Ken would tell them was that their ‘brother’ was still distraught over what his mother had done to him. Upon hearing that all the boys joined in and formed a group hug. Then, when they released the hug, Phillip, after wiping the tears off his face, smiled at everyone and he thanked all his ‘brothers’ for coming to help him.

All of Phillip’s ‘brothers’ told the young Cover that they would always be there for him. They then told him goodnight, before they walked back to their own rooms. ‘Dad’ Ken then reminded him to drain his lizard before he lays down.

“I thought it was a dragon?” asked a smiling Phillip.

“Well, just like a dragon, the lizard needs to be drained, too. So, before you go to bed, make sure you drain whichever one needs to be emptied,” quipped the foster dad.

The two laughed and they each headed in the direction they needed to go.

The next morning, when Phillip came into the Kitchen Nook for his breakfast, ‘dad’ Ken asked him if he was doing better than he was last night. Phillip smiled back at his ‘dad’ and told him that he was. The young Cover added that he never had anyone before who cared about him like he and his ‘brothers’ do, and last night it made him feel safe and that he belonged. The young Cover then went about getting Chief her fresh kibble and water.

Mr. Ken inwardly smiled that Phillip outwardly acknowledged how he felt after his ‘brothers’ came to him, when he was feeling so down about the way his mother had decided to leave him there at The Cove. He hoped that last night was the high-water point of the boy’s accepting what was to be, for the foreseeable future.

After Phillip finished fixing Chief’s fresh food and water, and had sat down, he looked over to his ‘dad’ and told him that he thought of some names to call their new puppy. Matthew spoke up, as well, and told the man that he thought of a few names, too.

‘Dad’ Ken smiled back at the boys and asked them to hold onto those names until later when they and their ‘brothers’ are all together, and they can all share the names they all came up with and agree on what they all want to name the new resident pet.

The boys agreed to do that and then they went back to finishing their Momma Maria breakfast.

When the three teens came down for breakfast, the first thing that Billy wanted to know was how Phil was doing that morning. He had an inward concern for the younger Cover, and he needed to know if his younger ‘brother’ was doing any better this morning.

The foster dad knew that Billy had never had any siblings, and he frequently saw that his compassion for his younger ‘brothers’ regularly came out, whenever he felt if something was amiss with any of them. Mr. Ken liked what he noticed in the older teenager. He felt that the teen would become a wonderful family man, when he marries, and has children of his own one day.

“Well, Bill, as a matter-of-fact, your younger ‘brother’ … he is doing exceedingly well considering how you all saw him last night. I think with you all coming to him, and giving him a group hug … that was what he needed. He told me so himself this morning. Now, eat your breakfast before Momma gets the ‘spoon’ after you,” laughed Mr. Ken.

Mr. Ken made a few calls that day from his office to let the new puppies owners know that they could come over on Saturday, and chose their puppy. The first call was to the Goldersons, but he got their answering machine, so he had to call Levi at the bank. After talking to Levi, he called Judy at her work. They both said they would come over to The Cove at noon on Saturday to choose their puppy.

Chris Dominions already knew about coming over to The Cove on Saturday, so when Ken got off the phone, he asked Ben to come to his office. When the President of TFE came to his employer’s office, he learned that he and his family could come over to The Cove on Saturday and choose their new puppy. Hearing that put a big smile on the man’s face. He couldn’t wait to get back to his office and tell his wife, Addison.

In the meantime, Wayne had been asked to go out and get the new resident puppy its collar and lead and a carrier, so they could use it to begin to train the new resident pup, as its place to go to sleep, and a place of safety.

The Estate Master was also to get the puppy a few more play toys for him to have to chew on, and for the boys to play with him. Wayne was also supposed to get the puppy his own special puppy growth food that he would begin to eat starting that weekend, after his brood mates left him.

That night after dinner, ‘dad’ Ken talked to the boys about the other puppies getting their new homes that Saturday. The man told them that after Saturday, there would only be Chief and her son, as the two resident pets at The Cove.

The boys were anxious to name their new resident Cover pet, and they asked when they would name the new puppy. The boys then started to call out the names they were thinking of. But ‘Dad’ Ken asked the boys to keep thinking about what they wanted to name their new resident pet, and pledged that they would name the puppy later Saturday night, after all the puppy’s litter mates were taken to their new homes.

Continuing their nightly meeting, ‘dad’ Ken announced that Phillip might want to talk to them about their three-day trip, so he can get an idea of where he might want to go. The man asked the boys to be upfront with their ‘brother’ about why they went where they did, and what they liked and disliked about it.

“And, boys,” began ‘dad’ Ken, “Charles … he asked if you could all have your classmates over, as you did one time before. I think it is a good idea. The only problem with it is you will have to find a date that won’t interfere with your trip to either Six Flags, or SeaWorld, or your sleepover. Plus, you’ll need to coordinate with Mr. Wayne and Mr. Dennis in case I am gone that weekend, for some reason or other. Discuss it amongst yourselves, and let me know if that’s what you want to do, but, again, you need to at least talk to Mr. Wayne.”

Hearing that Charles wanted to invite some of their classmates over again was news to the rest of the Cover boys, so that caused a lot of discussion right there between them in the Great Room. Mr. Ken had to ask the boys to, “Take it upstairs,” after they let the pups outside to pee one last time and they gave Chief and the puppies fresh ice water for the night.

‘Dad’ Ken always asked the boys if they had anything they wanted to bring up, and as soon as he asked, Robert wanted to know if he decided whether, or not, if he Billy and Charles could go to the away football game tomorrow night.

‘Dad’ Ken laughed at hearing his son’s question. He had been really busy at work and had totally forgotten to let the boys know that he had decided to permit them to go to the away football game, after they had asked earlier in the week. The reason he decided to approve their attendance at the game was because they had always been good, respectful and had never caused him any consternation, or bother.

Even when Billy first came to live at The Cove, the trouble that he found himself in, wasn’t of his making. It was because the high school principal was out to give Ken Thomas some payback for what happened many years ago, when Collin lived with him.

The oldest teenager was ultimately found not to be the instigator of the fight, and was absolved of any involvement in the incident. The principal was eventually relieved of his position and the three students who were the initiators of the ruckus were sent to the alternative high school.

Upon hearing they could go to the football game, Robert and Charles were all smiles. Billy, on the other hand, still didn’t have a ride, and it was evident by the look on his face that he was not all that happy just yet.

When ‘dad’ Ken asked the older teen about his going, Billy conceded that he might not, but he would try to find a ride when he’s at school tomorrow. The foster dad asked him to text him with the name of his ride, if it was someone that he didn’t know.

With nothing else that the boys wanted to bring up, the boy’s ‘dad’ had one more item he wanted to let the boys know about.

“Boys … Bill and Robert … they want to go and visit with their mothers again. This will take up another one of your weekends, unless you want to invite your classmates over on the Sunday after your ‘brothers’ visit their moms. So, talk it over with one another and make sure you talk to Mr. Wayne and Mr. Dennis to let them know if that is what you plan to do, and you need their help.

After the boys went up to relax before bed, Wayne thanked his boss for the heads-up on the boys inviting their classmates over and that Robert and Bill wanted to visit their moms again. He told Mr. Ken that he would mention it to Dennis, in passing, so he knows in case he is needed. The Estate Master then asked his boss if he thought any more about giving Dennis a coin, and left that question unanswered.

Wayne then excused himself and told his employer that he’d see him in the morning. The man then departed The Cove, and headed over to his apartment, leaving Mr. Ken to go upstairs and say goodnight to the boys by himself.

After the boys were upstairs for a short time, Mr. Ken went up to say goodnight. Again, with Wayne going home early, the owner of The Cove was given the duty to wish the boys a good night’s sleep, alone. The man started in Bill’s room, as was his habit, and they each talked a little about what was covered in that night’s meeting.

Mr. Ken and Billy talked about his going to the game, and the foster dad asked him again to text him with the name of the person he would catch a ride with to the game, if it was someone he didn’t know, or hadn’t met. Billy thanked him for being so understanding, and he promised he would text the name, when he had one.

The biggest issue the other boys talked about before going to bed was the naming of their newest resident pet. They all commented that they wished they could have chosen the new pup’s name that night. However, ‘dad’ Ken told all of them he figured it would take a long time, with the five of them giving names, and with the eventual discussion that would obviously occur; he didn’t want to have a prolonged meeting that night.

The boys accepted his explanation, and they all loved the hugs he gave them before he departed their room for one of their ‘brothers’. And, before long, The Cove was quiet with everyone, including Chief and her young family of five pups, sound asleep.
