From the Previous Chapter:
Phillip said that he understood and the two then hugged, and they each went their separate ways. Out in the hallway, ‘dad’ Ken met up with Matthew and Sarge, as they came up the stairs from being outside. Chief was now headed down the stairs with Mr. Ken to go outside to empty her bladder, as she would be soon resting in Phillip’s room.
Mr. Ken looked back at the day as he got ready for bed. He thanked his lucky stars for the five great boys that he had living with him. He was also happy that the boys had a good time with their fellow students to share what they had with them. Before long the man laid down and soon The Cove was quiet the whole night through.
When Ken Thomas woke up Sunday morning and got himself ready before he went out to get his newspaper, he was thinking of calling Mackenzie Flores. He was thinking of giving her a gentle nudge to come over, and visit with her son. She hadn’t called, as she said she would, and he was getting upset at her disinterested attitude, when it came to her son, Phillip.
When the man sat down with his first cup of hot coffee and began to separate the newspaper, as was his habit, he looked at the clock and then told himself it was too early to call Mackenzie. So, he took the first section and looked over the headlines, and then began to read.
Besides getting caught up on what was happening in the world, he was looking for a specific article. Bill Jackson was supposed to have filed lawsuits against the three television and two radio stations, and he figured the newspaper would have picked up on that and made it a big headline to bring in the readers, particularly after they came to The Cove yesterday, and got a comment from him.
It wasn’t until he picked up Section B, the Local News, where he saw the headline:
Slander and Defamation Lawsuits
Ken Thomas anxiously read what the reporter had to say about the lawsuits.
The man was so engrossed in reading the article that he didn’t hear Phillip and Chief, as well as Matthew and Sarge, come into the Kitchen Nook. When he recognized they were there, he saw they were taking care of feeding the resident pets, and then he looked at the time and then he decided he better call Mackenzie if he wanted to catch her at home.
‘Dad’ Ken said good morning to the boys, as he walked out of the Nook on his way to the Study, and the boys returned the greeting. Then when ‘dad’ Ken was out of earshot, Matthew asked Phillip why he was already showered and dressed for the day. Phillip told his ‘brother’ that he hoped his mom was going to stop by today.
The young Cover also told the pre-teen that their ‘dad’ had called his mother earlier in the week, and asked her to stop by and she was supposed to have called to confirm, but she hadn’t. Phillip hoped their ‘dad’ was going to the Study to call her again to remind her to come over and talk to him.
In the Study, Ken Thomas first closed the door, before he called Makenzie Flores. The phone rang and rang, but before long the woman answered and Ken heard what seemed to be a woman who had just awakened and had possibly been out the night before. It was 9:15 a.m.
“Mackenzie … Ken Thomas … I hope I found you at a good time that we can talk,” began the foster parent.
Mackenzie took a few moments to focus her mind at who it was on the phone, and what he was talking about. Then it dawned on her who it was and she remembered it was her son’s foster parent, Ken Thomas.
“Oh, yes, Mr. Ken … ah, what can I do for you?’ asked a hung-over Mackenzie.
“Well, Mackenzie, you were supposed to have called me last Wednesday, so we could set up a meeting between you and your son this weekend. When you hadn’t called, I left a message on Thursday for you to call me, and you still hadn’t. So, I am calling you to see if you can come over today and talk to your son, Phillip,” explained Mr. Ken.
“Oh, yes, well … on Wednesday they … they had me work overtime and I just plain forgot and … and I didn’t check my phone messages on Thursday, since I was tired after working so long, and then having to work again. And you’re calling me now because you want me to come over and talk with my son?” blankly asked Mackenzie, whose head was spinning for being awakened so early after going to bed so late.
“Yes, Mackenzie it’s been almost four weeks since you decided to leave your son in the system. And you owe it to him … to explain why you did that. He often asks when he will get to talk to you, and he was looking forward to seeing you this weekend. So … are you going to make the effort and come over and tell him why you left him with me?” said an irritated Ken Thomas.
“Ah, Mr. Ken … I ah … I don’t think today will be a good time for me. I guess if I had returned your call, I could have made it, but.” And Ms. Flores was cut off just then.
“But nothing Mackenzie!” yelled Ken Thomas. “Your son … he needs to talk to you and he needs to see you. You’ve made NO effort at all to contact him in the last four weeks, and now … and now you’re making excuses not to come over to see him.
“You have all day that you can use to show up and do the right thing. He will be here all day, so you have no excuse not to show up! You just need to make your son your priority for today,” stated Mr. Ken.
Mackenzie didn’t respond to what the man just said. He could tell that she was still on the phone, and he felt that he undoubtedly made her feel guilty for not making her son a priority in her life. But he really didn’t care how she felt. He only cared about how Phillip was taking the rejection he was feeling from his own mother not making the time to come to see and talk to him.
“Mr. Ken … I’ll … I’ll see what I can do. I’ve already made other plans for today,” now spoke up the woman.
“Mackenzie … all I can say is that the ONLY PLANS you should have made for today is for YOU …. is for you to visit with your ONLY SON! The hell with whatever you planned! Your SON … he should be your ONLY priority! But it seems to me that you are only thinking about yourself. I hope we will see you later today. If not … then we will know that your son is NOT your priority right now. Goodbye, Mackenzie.” And with that Ken Thomas hung up the call.
After hanging up the call, Ken Thomas was exasperated at the woman’s attitude, and he also felt exhausted from trying to talk to her. He couldn’t understand how a mother could treat her only son the way this woman was treating Phillip. It was as if Phillip was a pain, a bother, a nuisance that she couldn’t shake off.
While ‘dad’ Ken was trying to talk some sense into Mackenzie Flores, Matthew and Phillip had gotten out some breakfast tacos and began to heat them for their breakfast. Charles had also come down, and was looking for his dad. He was hoping he could talk him into taking them out for breakfast.
But when he saw that the Study door was closed when he came down the stairs, and heard that he was on the phone from his ‘brothers’, he knew he shouldn’t bother him, and that now it was too late to ask him to take them out to eat.
Charles then got out nine more tacos for him, Billy and Robert and while he unwrapped them for the microwave, the two older teens came into the kitchen Nook.
“Why are you up and already dressed?” Billy asked Phillip.
“Well … I’m hoping my mother will come over to see me today, and I don’t know when she will be here,” answered the youngest Cover.
‘Dad’ Ken came into the Kitchen Nook just then and heard the boy’s answer. He didn’t know what he should tell the boy, but he knew he needed to tell him something. So, he called the boy over to him.
“Phillip … I just got off the phone with you mother,” began ‘dad’ Ken.
“Is she coming over today?” excitedly asked Phillip.
“Honestly, Phillip … I do not know. We did talk … and I told her that you would be here all day, but she did not commit to being here at any specific time. So, I guess … I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if and when she will get here,” offered ‘dad’ Ken.
The disappointment immediately showed on the boy’s face, and seeing it ‘dad’ Ken pulled him to himself and hugged the boy. The boy’s ‘brothers’ could now hear slight crying coming from their youngest, and they all gathered around their ‘dad’ and ‘brother’ and formed a group hug.
When Phillip came out of the hug, tears still streaming down his cheeks, he thanked his ‘dad’ and ‘brothers’ for being there for him, and then he ran away presumingly up to his room where he would cry in earnest that he felt his mother didn’t think enough about him to want to see and talk to him.
The young boy’s ‘brothers’ wanted to go after him, but ‘dad’ Ken told them to stay there and let their younger ‘brother’ get the hurt out of his system. The man told them that Phillip had been looking forward to his mom coming over all week, and now it looks like she probably won’t, as he talked to her that morning and she didn’t want to commit.
The boys went back to eating their breakfast, and after a few minutes, Matthew asked if anyone knew where Sarge was. Then Robert asked if anyone saw where Chief went. Billy spoke up and told his ‘brothers’ that he thinks he saw the two resident pets sneaking out of the Nook. The teenager then added that he bets they probably went up to Phillip’s room to console him.
And indeed, that was where Chief and Sarge did go. Chief put her paws up on Phillip’s bed and began to lick his tears, as a way of trying to console the youngster. Sarge saw what his mother was trying to do to the boy, and the resident pup found a way to jump up onto the bed. Sarge then laid down on the other side of Phillip, and he placed his head and muzzle above the boy’s head on the pillow, and Phillip felt their love.
Knowing the two resident pets were there for him, Phillip reached around and placed one arm around Sarge, and the other onto Chief and he began to pet them. As he did the boy’s tears began to subside, and his internal hurt slowly left his body. It was then the young Cover fell asleep.
An hour after the boy had run up to his room, ‘dad’ Ken decided to go up and check on his foster son. The other boys followed along and ‘dad’ Ken didn’t stop them. As the Covers approached the bedroom, Chief and Sarge lifted their heads to see who was coming.
As they approached his bedroom, Mr. Ken and the boys saw how Chief had her head on the bed, and that Sarge was on the bed, and that Phillip had one arm around each of them. They all thought the scene was cute, but ‘dad’ Ken decided to sit down on the bed in order to wake the boy up. Matthew called Sarge to him, but he didn’t want to leave his new found friend. ‘Dad’ Ken told the boys to go and get ready for the day, and to leave the dogs there.
“Phillip … it is time to wake up,” lightly called ‘dad’ Ken.
When the boy didn’t stir, ‘dad’ Ken tried again. “Phillip … come on ‘son’ … wake up.” And he also gently shook the boy.
This time Chief added out a low bark. And hearing his mom do that Sarge put out a high-pitched yelp, which got the boy to open his eyes. Chief, seeing the boy’s eyes open, gave Phillip a few doggie kisses. Sarge did the same.
“I hope you had a good nap, ‘son’. And I’m sorry that your mother may not stop by today. She didn’t say she wouldn’t, but again, she didn’t say that she would. … I see that you had two good friends to be with you as you slept. Are you ready to meet up with Easton in about an hour?” asked ‘dad’ Ken to change the subject.
“Thank you, ‘dad’, for trying to get my mom to stop by. I guess we’ll see later if she’ll come by. And yes, I can’t wait to see if Easton can add what I think our band needs,” replied a smiling Phillip.
Mr. Ken petted Chief, and then Sarge, and thanked them for taking care of their young charge, when he wasn’t feeling good. The man then told the youngster that he was headed down to his retreat to get ready for the day, and that he’d see him up at the Main Gate around noon.
As the man left the bedroom, Phillip hugged Chief and then Sarge, and thanked them for coming to his aide, when he was feeling so low. He then told them why he was feeling that way. The boy knew that Chief knew what he was talking about. But what surprised him was that Sarge, who was still on the bed, came over to him and gave him some puppy kisses, as though he, too, knew what he had said. Phillip hugged Sarge with both arms that time.
Easton and his parents came to the Main Gate at twelve o’clock, and both Mr. Ken and Phillip were there to meet them. Phillip was anxious to see his new friend’s portable keyboard, but first he needed to get Easton registered in the database.
While the boys were in the Guard House, Camilla introduced their nine-year-old daughter Remi to Mr. Ken. Holden told the man that the girl was staying with the neighbors yesterday when they brought Easton over. Mrs. Brooks then asked if they could watch and listen for a while as their son got set up with the band and they played some.
Mr. Ken told them that he didn’t see a problem with that, and that this way they could also see the Cove Skate Park and Pavilion that they didn’t get to see yesterday.
While all that was going on, the other Cover friends were arriving and heading over to the Pavilion. One of the boys’ friends, who hadn’t been to The Cove for quite some time, came through the Main Gate.
“Logan,” offered a surprised Mr. Ken, “it’s been a month of Sundays since we’ve seen you here last,” now chuckled the owner of The Cove.
“Oh, hi Mr. Ken. Yes, it has been a long time since I’ve been here, you know, with work and everything. Oh … I want to thank you for what you, you know, for what you told Mr. Nelson about Charles and me and working at Four Corners,” finished Logan, Robert’s friend.
“Logan … Nelson …he thinks a great deal about you, young man. He sees how easy you learn things, and how much you want to learn, and know more about how things work at the park. You know, as you get older, and we expand the park there will be more for you to learn, and you can eventually become a supervisor. But I think I better let Nelson explain all that to you,” laughed Mr. Ken.
“Oh, he already told me that when I turn sixteen, he wants to make me a lead supervisor. He also told me that I don’t have to worry about Charles coming over there and taking my job from me,’ laughed Logan.
“Mr. Nelson … he also told me that Charles … that he wants to go and work for that man who opened Edgewood for you. He also told me that he has looked at colleges, where he can study to get a college degree in amusement parks, or something like that. That is why I came over today. I want to talk to him about those schools. I want to look into them, too. Mr. Nelson told me that one day I could be an assistant operations manager,” excitedly exclaimed Logan. “I never thought about that as a career choice, but now I am excited about it.”
Mr. Ken told the teenager to hurry up and catch up with Robert and the other boys, as he tends to Phillip’s new friend’s parents.
And by then Phillip and Easton were finished in the Guard House and were anxious to get over to the Pavilion and get set up. So, Mr. Ken had the three Brooks jump onto the six-seat golf cart, while Phillip and Easton retrieved the electric keyboard out of the car and put it in the four-seat golf cart, and they then headed over to the Pavilion to catch up with the other band members.
Mr. Ken took his time driving over to the Pavilion. He stopped along the way, so the Brooks could get out of the cart and walk over to the skate park and look at its elements, and the deep bowls and feel how smooth the concrete was.
In the meantime, Easton was able to set up his keyboard, and the band found a good place for it to be situated within the group. The band had the music sheets that Mr. Wayne had bought for them earlier that summer, and they had Easton look them over. They did that so when the band began to play, he was able to follow along easier.
The band did go a bit slower at first, so their new member could get the feel of how they played. But by the fourth or fifth song, the band was playing as they normally did, as they were getting ready for their first booking in three weeks, and they had to be ready.
By that time Camilla, Holden and Remi were now sitting down and enjoying a cold drink, as they watched and listened to the band. The parents looked on as the eight boys played, but their focus was the smile on their son’s face, and they immediately knew he was thoroughly enjoying playing his keyboard with boys his age. They looked at one another and they both agreed that if the band asked him to play with them; they would approve.
Before long the Brooks told Mr. Ken that they would get from under his feet, and then come back for their son. But Mr. Ken told them that if their son was going to be a frequent visitor coming over every weekend, he wanted to show them around The Cove, so they would understand what Easton would undoubtedly be telling them over time.
So, Mr. Ken had the three of them get back on the golf cart and he took them down to the house, and he gave them the nickel tour. The Brooks were astonished at what they were seeing. They couldn’t believe that the man and his five boys lived in such wonderful accommodations.
They also couldn’t believe the boys had the cove to swim in, the personal watercraft to use when they were old enough, and the sailboats to sail, when they took the training. They also couldn’t believe the size of the indoor pool their son got to use the previous day.
By the time the nickel tour was over, the boys had begun getting the barbeque ready, and Mr. Ken invited the Brooks to stay and enjoy a ‘burned’ burger, or hot dog. He then told them the story of how the boys, over time, used to cook down off the Patio, and now up at the Pavilion, and how the term ‘burned’ came about.
The Brooks enjoyed a late lunch that Sunday and they also got the chance to sit and talk with their son about his playing with the band. Easton told his mom and dad how fun it was to finally play with boys his age, and know that they were a legitimate band that would play at two booked events later that month. The eleven-year-old thanked his parents for allowing him to come over and to play, and he hoped they would let him come back again and again.
The band members, as they ate, were talking amongst themselves about whether they should ask Easton to join them. They all knew that Phillip wanted a keyboard player to be a part of the band, and the main discussion centered around what Easton would bring to the band.
Preston and Bryson, who were just the singers, spoke right up and said that they could hear how much the keyboard added to the music. They both voted to add Easton to the band. Jeff, the drummer, agreed that the keyboard provided harmony and rhythm to the music.
Ty spoke up and told the members the keyboard plays a supporting role in rock bands, and helps add to the versatility to the music. Then Phillip added that the keyboard is a multi-dimensional instrument and added the reason he wants a keyboard player is because if Easton can eventually get a better keyboard, he can then use it to play the role of other instruments, like violins, a saxophone, or trumpets, if needed, and also produce lots of other sound effects.
Westin and Bryce were the only band members who hadn’t voiced their opinion. The others looked to them for some input. Westin told the group he was all for adding Easton, and Bryce told them that he agreed with Phillip that a good electric keyboard would only enhance the band.
Phillip saw that the Brooks were getting up from their table, and he figured they were probably getting ready to leave, so he hurried over to them.
“Mr. and Mrs. Brooks … the band … we all want Easton to join us. That is … if that is OK with you,” quickly spoke up Phillip.
Camilla and Holden looked to one another and smiled, and they both agreed that their son could join the band. They then asked if there was anything that their son needed. Phillip looked to his ‘dad’ and then said that it would be nice if Easton had a better keyboard, if they could manage it. The Cover explained that a better keyboard could mimic other instruments, like saxophones and trumpets and make other sound effects, which would enhance the bands overall sound.
Ken Thoms spoke up and told the Brooks that if they had a problem in getting their son a better keyboard, he could help out there. But Holden exclaimed that they wouldn’t have any trouble in affording a better instrument. He indicated that the one they got him was just so he could practice his piano lessons, when they were away from home.
Easton heard the exchange, and was happy that he could not only join the band, but that he was also going to get a better keyboard in order to play in the band.
The two boys accompanied Mr. Ken and the parents and Easton’s sister, Remi, over to the Main Gate. On the way over, Mr. Ken explained to the Brooks that Easton can come over any time that Phillip is there, and when there isn’t any school the next day he can stay until six, and when there is school the next day he can only stay until five o’clock.
Once the parents had left, the two boys rode over to the Pavilion with Mr. Ken and the boys, and instead of going swimming, decided to play, so Easton could get a better understanding of the songs he would need to learn to play by the end of October. The band now consisted of eight members.
When Easton left that evening, Phillip gave him the sheet music that Mr. Wayne had bought them during the summer. The Cover told their newest band member to use the sheet music to get more familiar with the songs they were playing, and that they would also get him more involved with the Halloween songs next weekend when he came over.
The Covers went out for dinner, as they practically always did on Sunday’s. They didn’t stop at Four Corners, as they knew it would be busy. So, they decided to have breakfast for dinner.
At Mr. Ken’s favorite breakfast diner, IHOP, the Cover’s each looked through the menu and ordered something different. Only Mr. Ken ordered breakfast for dinner. The boys ordered either Crispy Chicken Fingers, Salisbury Steak, or Sirloin Steak Tips platters, as a change from eating burgers.
As they ate, Mr. Ken talked to Phillip about his new keyboard player. The young Cover was excited that their band finally had someone who could play a keyboard, and he was hopeful that when he got his new keyboard, he would enhance the band tremendously.
The boy’s ‘brothers’ all commented on how much better the band sounded with the keyboard player. Billy told his younger ‘brother’ he was happy for him that he was able to find someone who could round out his band.
Phillip then asked his ‘dad’ if Easton would be able to go to Fiesta Texas with them on Saturday. Mr. Ken looked at this young ‘son’, and told him that he only had four extra tickets and he already told Bill and Robert, they could have them for their friends who now have jobs.
Mr. Ken then asked Bill and Robert if they knew of any of their working buddies who wanted to go with them on Saturday. Billy told the man that Lonnie asked if he could get one of those extra tickets. Robert said that Logan was going to ask Mr. Nelson for Saturday off, but wouldn’t know until Wednesday, at the earliest.
Mr. Ken then asked the two teens if they knew of anyone else who even remotely wanted to go. Neither teenager knew of any of their other friends who worked who were interested. But Mr. Ken wanted to be fair, so he told the two oldest Cover teens they each had until Wednesday at dinner time to let him know if one more of their friends wanted to go. He then looked to Phillip and told the boy that if there is one extra ticket then Easton can go.
Mr. Ken then asked Phillip to tell Easton about the trip, but to explain to him that all the tickets were spoken for before he came into the picture. The man did tell the boy to have Easton ask his parents if he could go along, if a ticket becomes available. Mr. Ken told Phillip that he would call him Wednesday night after dinner to let him know if there was an available ticket. The man then asked the young Cover if he felt that was fair. Phillip agreed that it was fair since the trip was already scheduled.
As they continued to eat their dinner, Mr. Ken asked Charles if Logan talked to him today. The teen said that he had, and that he was surprised as to what he asked him. Robert spoke up just then and asked his brother why Logan wanted to talk to him.
The brother explained that his friend called and asked him if Charles would be there today, and if he could come over, which was strange to him, because Logan had been coming over for the past three years, or so, before he got his job at Four Corners.
Charles told the rest of the Covers that Logan revealed to him that Mr. Nelson talked to him about him becoming a lead supervisor, when he turned sixteen, and then asked him if wanted to learn to be assistant operations manager after he graduates from college.
That revelation surprised everyone, especially Robert, who knew his brother wanted to learn how to operate their dad’s amusement parks, when he graduated from college. So, he asked his brother what Logan had to say.
Chares told Robert, and of course everyone else, “Logan said that he’d heard through Mr. Nelson that I was looking at colleges, where I could possibly get a degree in operating amusement parks, and Logan wanted to get the information, so he could look into them as well.
“I bet that dad told Mr. Nelson about my wanting to go to that kind of college, because Logan told me dad told him that I wanted to go and work for Mr. Jason when I was old enough.
“So, dad … did you tell Mr. Sanders about me wanting to work at Adventure Park, when I’m sixteen? Come on, now … did you?” persisted Charles.
A smiling dad Ken replied, “Well, yes … I did. Ben and I … we asked Nelson if he had identified anyone who he could train, as his assistant, as he can’t be expected to work there 24/7. Well, he told us about how well Logan has worked out for him, and he wished the boy was already old enough. That was when I told him about your looking into seeing if there was some sort of college degree in amusement parks.”
“So, what did Logan say,” asked Matthew.
“Well, Logan told me that he was afraid that dad would make Mr. Nelson train me to learn to be an assistant manager, but when he told me that dad told Mr. Nelson that I want to work for Mr. Jason, Logan felt relieved and decided he’d like to work in dad’s parks too,” finished Charles.
As they finished up dinner, Matthew asked if they were going to stop and get Sarge and Chief some ice cream on the way home. All the boys pestered their ‘dad’ that they should, and then the question was if they should get hard dipped, or soft serve. A vote was taken and soft serve won out, so they stopped at DQ on the way home. Both Matthew and Phillip presented the resident pets the cold treat when they entered the Kitchen Nook.
That was the second time Sarge was given the cold treat, and he went at the soft serve cold treat with gusto. He followed that cold concoction all around the Nook’s floor, as he licked every morsel out of the cup. Chief did the exact same thing, but Sarge was more animated, since this was only his second time enjoying the cold creation.
After the resident pets had enjoyed their treat, the Covers went to the Study to have their meeting. Of course, Sarge sat in Matthew’s lap, while Chief laid right next to Phillip, as ‘dad’ Ken reviewed what was happening around The Cove the next week, or so.
Mr. Ken again reminded the boys that he was taking them to the Marina Seafood Wharf & Steak House on Wednesday, so they would get the chance to see what it was all about. He added that sometime on Thursday the Walthers would drop off Daisy for the weekend.
He also jogged their memory that Kate and her boys would get there on Thursday, around dinner time, and they would be going to Fiesta Texas with them. The man said that he and Kate would be attending the Grand Opening of the Seafood Wharf & Steak House on Sunday night.
Matthew asked his ‘dad’ if he was going back east when Kate and her boys left on Monday. The man said that all he would do was ride with them to the airport and that he wasn’t scheduled to go back east until later in the month. ‘Dad’ Ken didn’t review the whole schedule with the boys, deciding he didn’t want to confuse them with all the things that were going to happen between then and the end of the Holidays.
Later, up in their bedrooms, the boys had their own questions about the coming days. But one boy, in particular, had a question on his mind.
When ‘dad’ Ken went to his room, the boy looked up to the man and asked, “‘Dad’ … do you think my mom … do you think she will ever make time for me?” And then the boy broke down and cried.
Mr. Ken went over to the crying boy, pulled him to himself, hugged him and let him cry so he could get the hurt out. When the boy began to settle down, ‘dad’ Ken knew it was time to talk to his foster son.
“Phillip, ‘son’ … all I can do is make the phone calls, and try to shame her into making the time to see and talk to you. I can’t go over to her home and drag her here. Although, I wish I could, because, right now, that is what I think it will take. I will talk to Ms. Judy during the week to see if there is anything she can do.
“And Phillip … please know that you are loved here, and you … you are one of us. We all know how much you want to get back with your mom. But with the attitude she has taken, as of late, just keep focusing on your schoolwork and the band, and eventually things will work out. I promise. OK?” counseled ‘dad’ Ken.
Phillip hugged his ‘dad’ with all his might. The man has always been truthful with him and right now he has nowhere else to go.
