From the Previous Chapter:
Phillip smiled at hearing the answer, and said that he hoped that his mom would want to talk to him and tell him why she decided to let him stay there at The Cove. ‘Dad’ Ken assured the boy that when he talks to his mom, that he will make that a priority for her to talk to him about when they do get together. Phillip thanked the man for saying that he’d do that for him. The two shared a quick hug, before Mr. Ken sent the boy to drain his dragon and then to get to bed.
On his way to his own retreat, Ken Thomas saw that Matthew had Sarge on his lead, and they were headed down the stairs, and presumably outside, so the resident puppy could empty his bladder before going to bed. For that the owner of The Cove was happy.
It had been a full and busy week, and Mr. Ken was looking forward to enjoying sleeping in his big, wonderful king-sized bed. The owner of The Cove was the last Cover to finally fall asleep that night. The Cove’s residents all had a peaceful and restful sleep that night.
It had been a long weekend, and when the boys’ alarm clocks went off that Monday morning Matthew and Phillip didn’t want to get out of bed. But Chief knew that Phillip needed to get up, because his alarm went off. So, she made the decision to get him out of bed.
And in another bedroom down the hall, Sarge was so antsy to empty his bladder that he made enough racket that Matthew had to get out of bed to take him outside to let the resident puppy relieve himself.
The two younger Covers, after taking care of their resident pet, took their showers, dressed for school, and then headed to the Kitchen Nook to fix the resident pets bowls of fresh kibble and water, with some ice cubes in it, before sitting down to a Momma Maria breakfast.
As the two youngsters ate, Phillip asked, “‘Dad’, you won’t forget to call my mom, will you?”
“No ‘son’ I won’t forget. It’s been three weeks, and I think it’s time for you two to sit down and talk,” replied ‘dad’ Ken, who went right back to reading his morning newspaper.
It wasn’t long after the two younger boys left for school, that the three teenagers came down for breakfast. They all told their ‘dad’ and Momma Maria good morning, and then they sat down for their Momma breakfast.
It was while they ate that Charles asked his dad if they could invite their classmates over that Saturday to skate, swim and have a barbeque, as they did once before. The teen’s dad told the boys that if they don’t do it that weekend, then there probably wasn’t any other time until after the Holidays, that they would have the opportunity. He then told the teens to make sure their ‘brothers’ knew to start inviting some of their classmates.
Billy and Robert then asked how many they could invite. ‘Dad’ Ken suggested they each invite no more than seven classmates if they are still going to allow their regular friends to attend. The man then told the boys to make sure that they would have enough supplies, like burgers, hotdogs, buns, toppings and drinks for the extra 50 to 60 people.
The teens thanked their ‘dad’ for letting them have this last big barbeque, and while they walked up to the Main Gate to go outside to catch the school bus, Robert texted Matthew and Phillip. The teenager told his two younger ‘brothers’ to start thinking about who they’d like to invite over that Saturday, besides their regular friends, for skating, swimming and a big barbeque.
At work, Ken Thomas held his usual Monday morning meeting with all of his Group business managers. They all briefed him on what their Group had accomplished since their last meeting, and the man was pleased with their achievements.
Mr. Ken always had the Real Estate Group, Construction/Design Group and Three Finger Entertainment, LLC. go last, as he didn’t want to keep the other managers there if they had other things pressing that they needed to do. He did offer to let them stay to hear what was being said, if they had the time. They usually did stay, as they wanted to know what was happening in Mr. Ken’s business world.
Mr. Ken’s first question to the Real Estate Group’s manager, after he gave his report, centered around the 8+ acre plot of land that abutted the Four Corners Amusement Park. He wanted to know if there was any movement with his acquiring that plot of land. The manager told his employer that the landowner was adamant about putting up an office building saying that with the explosion of development at Four Corners, there will ultimately be a need for one.
Ken Thomas thanked the man for his input and then turned his attention to the next manager, the Construction/Design Group. They told him that they had begun construction of the smaller buildings at the amusement park, that would be a part of the train’s scenery. They added that they had received the permits to start building the railroad station at the amusement park, and were ready as soon as Nelson gave them the needed space to stage the building materials, construction equipment and their office.
That revelation surprised the owner of the amusement park, and he asked Nelson Sanders for more information about the space needed for the construction of the railroad station. The operations manager of the Four Corners Amusement Park explained that the construction supervisor came to him expressing that he needed approximately twenty parking spots in order to stage his materials, and begin construction of the railroad station.
Mr. Ken looked over to Ben Walthers, the President of TFE, LLC., with the big question on his face. Ben knew immediately what he needed to say, but what he knew his boss didn’t want to hear.
“Mr. Thomas … this was discussed once before. And now that the building of the railroad station at the amusement park is going to heavily impact parking, we need … sir, we need to move forward with closing the miniature golf course, and turn it into additional parking,” spoke up Ben.
It got very quiet around the large table, as the people began looking around at one another wondering how Mr. Thomas was going to respond at hearing he needed to close the miniature golf course; one of his initial business ventures at Four Corners.
Mr. Ken asked the construction manager how long would the railroad station take from start to getting the occupancy permit. The construction manager told the owner of the amusement park that it would take a minimum of five months, but if weather interfered it could add at least one, if not two more months.
Mr. Ken sat back and thought for a few moments and then addressed Ben Walthers. “Ben … I want you to hold a news conference. Call up Rene Vaughn and have her meet you at Four Corners in front of the golf course. Tell her … tell her how the building of the railroad station will impact an already tenuous parking situation we have at Four Corners, and because of the loss of twenty parking spots we are going to close the miniature golf course, and turn it into additional parking for the foreseeable future.
“If she asks you what we are going do with the additional parking space after the station is completed and open, tell her … tell her that we are looking to expand the amusement park and we will be … and we will be adding a roller coaster, of some kind, there next summer to late fall,” finished a smiling Ken Thomas.
Everyone around the table smiled at the man’s reaction to the loss of the miniature golf course. Mr. Ken then reminded them that what they talk about there in their meetings is for internal use only, and not for them to go out and talk to their family and friends, especially when it comes to the Four Corners Amusement Park.
Miss Jackie, Jacqueline Kromiere, who was hired as Mr. Ken’s Projects Manager, went next. The woman brought everyone up to date on the installation of the track bed around the amusement park, and that construction of the schoolhouse, cottage with an outhouse, farmhouse with a paddock and the saloon the horse hitch and watering trough was well under way.
The Projects Manager continued and told Mr. Ken that that track installation supervisor had asked about the railroad station installation, and when it would be completed, so he can plan the installation of the track, the siding line to the station, and the accompanying crosswalk signals and gates.
As the meeting was ending, Mr. Ken thanked everyone for their input. He reiterated that the sharing of what everyone was doing, and involved in, gave them a perspective of how busy the Three Finger Team was. He added that it gives them insight into what their goals are in order for them to be achieved, and much more. He then asked Nelson to stay a while, as he had something he wanted to talk to him about.
As everyone was leaving, the Real Estate Group Manager, who is actually a realtor, stopped to talk to Mr. Ken about that 8+ acre section of land next to the amusement park. He told the man that after Mr. Walthers announces that they plan to build a parking lot, and then a roller coaster on the now vacant miniature golf course, later, that it might be a way to wrangle the land away from the present owner. Mr. Thomas told the realtor to keep him informed.
Nelson Sanders, the operations manager at the Four Corners Amusement Park waited for the realtor and Mr. Ken to finish with their conversation. When the two were finished talking, Mr. Ken invited Nelson into his office to talk; about what? Nelson had no earthly idea.
But before he talked to the operations manager, he called Ben Walthers to come to the meeting, as well. Then, when the President of TFE was there, Mr. Ken started the impromptu meeting.
“Nelson,” began Ken Thomas, “have you identified any of your team members who might be someone who you might consider as a potential assistant operations manager?” directly asked the owner of the amusement park.
“Mr. Thomas … honestly, I hadn’t thought about that. I know you told the other operations managers that you wouldn’t purposefully raid their assistants to come here to help me, if you could help it. But honestly … I never looked at the team members in terms of asking any of them to even consider wanting to train as my assistant,” replied Nelson.
“OK, I can accept that. You’ve only had them working for you for about four months and during that time you’ve had your hands full bringing the park up to speed, and finding your assistant wasn’t uppermost on your plate. But let me ask you. Does anyone stand out as someone that you’d consider as a candidate?” inquired Mr. Ken.
“Whoa, that is a loaded question for sure,” chuckled Nelson. “But yes, there is someone that stands out above the rest. He has shown himself as a go-getter from the beginning and is always trying to learn how to do a different position.”
“And who is that?” asked Ben Walthers.
“Logan, Logan Anderson, and I wish I had more teens like him. He knows how to work all of the game booths and he has worked the food booths. He even jumps in and takes care of the trash bins when he sees they need emptying.
“When the teenager turns sixteen, I plan to name him as a lead supervisor. He has the knowledge, the skills, he’s people friendly, and he has the knack to identify problems before they become major ones. He’s even learned how to operate all of the rides,” offered a now smiling Nelson Sanders.
“How can he operate the rides, Nelson? He isn’t even sixteen yet,” directly asked a now concerned Mr. Thomas.
“Oh, well he doesn’t operate them with any guests in them. But when the mechanics are doing their daily inspections, Logan … he has offered to help, and they in turn have shown him how to do the inspection, and operate the rides,” stated the Four Corners operations manager.
“And to be honest, I did ask Logan when he got older if he would consider becoming a trainee and becoming an assistant ops manager. And you know what he told me, Mr. Thomas? He told me that your son, Charles, would be the one that I would probably get to train into that position. Logan told me that Charles wants to follow into your footsteps and eventually have his own park one day,” finished Nelson.
Mr. Ken smiled at first, then laughed at what he’d just heard. Even Ben Walthers smiled at what Nelson Sanders just told the two bosses of the Three Finger Entertainment world.
“Nelson, Charles, yes, he wants to work at my amusement parks. And you will probably have him working for you when he is old enough. But what he really wants to do is go and work for Jason. He got a taste for it when he and Ben’s son, Rylan, helped Jason get Edgewood ready for its Grand Opening.
“You see, I let Charles stay with Jason for a few days, while I took care of other business before the Grand Opening of Edgewood, and Charles … he got a quick immersion into park operations. He loved it. But I think you can sit down and talk to Logan, to belie his fears about Charles taking his job.
“By the way, Charles … he has already started to research colleges that offer amusement park operations courses and degrees. So, you might mention to Logan to have him talk to Charles, if he is interested in moving forward and training as an assistant ops manager. Sure, it will take him a few years, but if he has the desire and drive, getting him interested. But training him at this early age will be a boon for you and us,” finished Mr. Ken.
Ben then asked Nelson if there were any adults that he thought might be interested. Nelson said that he had a few that were always asking for more hours. So, Ben told him to talk to those people individually to see how they felt about training as his assistant, as he couldn’t maintain his 24/7 working days forever. He needed someone who could fill in for him.
Nelson, tongue in cheek, said to Ben that he thought that he’d fill in for him if he needed a break. That caused Mr. Ken to burst out laughing. Ben didn’t laugh at first, but then realized that in a pinch he’d have to until Nelson did find someone that he’d trained up enough to run the Four Corners Amusement Park.
It had been a long morning for Mr. Ken, and after visiting the men’s restroom, after the meeting, the first phone call he made after he returned to his office was to Kate.
The two, almost engaged adults, talked at length about everything that happened between the time Ken left Kate last Thursday and right then that Monday morning. Ken told her about the sleepover, and that the boys were going to have a large barbeque with more of their classmates that coming Saturday. The man laughed when he told her it would be interesting to see how many girls Matthew invites this time around.
Ken then asked Kate about her and the boys coming to visit during the three-day weekend. He reminded her that the Grand Opening of the Marina Seafood Wharf & Steak House was that Sunday night, and that he really would like to have her on his arm.
Kate asked Ken how she would get there with the boys still in school. Ken told her that she could take them out of school after lunch, and head to the airport, where he would have a plane waiting to bring them out there. He then told her that they would take the boys to Fiesta Texas on Saturday, and then on Sunday the older boys would watch them on their skateboards.
Ken then told Kate that they would get themselves ready for the Grand Opening of the Marina Seafood Wharf & Steak House at six, and have a wonderful evening together. Kate told him that she would seriously think about it, and that she would have to let him know.
At school that morning, both Matthew and Phillip received a text from Robert, before the first bell rang, about that Saturday being when their ‘dad’ said they could have up to seven of their classmates over to skate and a barbeque. But they didn’t have enough time to tell their friends about the text as the bell was about to ring. They would wait until the morning break, or lunch, and get their input as to whom they should invite.
When Matthew talked to his friends at lunch about the Saturday skate, swim and barbeque, he asked them which girls he should invite. It surprised them as they knew their Cover friend wasn’t one to get too involved with the girls in their class.
The Cover did remind them that the last time his ‘dad’ let them have some of their classmates over he invited Bailey, Kylie, Jade and Molly. Now he wanted to know who he should invite this time.
After he ate lunch, Phillip was having the same conversation with his friends. They were surprised that he could invite up to seven classmates and then they asked if they all had to be girls. Phillip smiled and said that he didn’t know, but that he did invite Ty, Tony, Kurt and Travis the last time, so he had to make sure he invited different people. The Cover said that he’d ask his ‘brothers’ tonight how many girls he should invite.
After lunch, Ken Thomas called Mackenzie Flores’ cell phone, but she didn’t answer. He left a message asking her to call him, when she got the chance. He didn’t say why he was calling, as he didn’t want her to give her time to come up with an excuse, as to why she couldn’t meet with her son to tell him why she decided to keep him in the system. He hoped that she would call him tonight.
Matthew and Phillip talked on the school bus, on the way home, about who they would invite over on Saturday. Phillip asked his ‘brother’ how many of the seven he should invite to be girls. Matthew chuckled and told Phillip that his older ‘brothers’ laughed at him because he only invited a few girls the last time, so he wasn’t the right person to ask.
Momma had the boy’s snack ready for them, when they returned home and they eagerly ate it, as they continued to talk about Saturday’s classmate skate, swim and barbeque. Hearing that was news to Momma and listening to what the boys talked about was how she usually learned about what was going to happen around The Cove.
Luckily for her the Saturday get together wouldn’t involve her, so she didn’t have to worry about fixing anything. At least she didn’t know if she would until Mr. Ken talked to her.
When the high school boys returned from school, Phillip sought them out. He asked Billy how many of the seven people he could invite over on Saturday should be girls. Billy and Robert told their younger ‘brother’ that he might consider breaking the seven into four girls and three boys. Phillip thanked them and went back to his room to finish working on his homework.
When the high school boys finished their snack, Billy told Robert and Charles they needed to check the supplies up at the Pavilion, so they knew how much they needed to have Momma, or Mr. Wayne and Mr. Dennis get for them, so they had enough for the get-together on Saturday.
The three teens quickly took a golf cart up to the Pavilion and took stock of what burger, hot dogs, buns, drinks, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, cheese, bacon, plates and flatware they had. They then agreed they also wanted chips, and possibly potato salad and maybe baked beans to make the barbeque a memorable time for everyone. They decided to talk to their ‘dad’ during their meeting tonight.
It was just before the Covers sat down to dinner that Mr. Ken’s phone rang at his desk in the Study. When the man looked at the Caller ID, he saw that it was Mackenzie Flores calling, so he answered it knowing that the call could be contentious.
“Hello, Mackenzie, thank you for calling me tonight,” was how Mr. Ken answered the call.
… … …
“Yes, well I thought that I would ask you if you felt it was time for you … that you should possibly sit down with your son and talk to him about why … about why you decided to leave him in the system with me. He’s asked me countless times, when he was going to get to talk to you,” directly stated Mr. Ken.
… … …
“Well … well, I thought that maybe this weekend sometime could work for you. I’m sure Phillip will be ready at any time you suggest,” offered the boy’s foster dad.
… … …
“OK, I understand. Please call me as soon as you can. But please let me know by Wednesday night. Phillip … he does have his guitar lesson at nine and a group of his classmates coming over Saturday afternoon and that is one thing I am sure he won’t want to miss,” imparted the owner of The Cove.
… … …
“Thank you, Mackenzie, I shall tell Phillip you said, ‘Hello’. Goodbye, then Mackenzie,” said Mr. Ken as he completed the call.
Momma Maria was standing at the door frame waiting for the man to finish his call to let him know that dinner was being served. She told him the boys were already sitting at the dinner table. The man looked at the time and noticed it was already 6:10, and he apologized for the delay. He followed the woman to the Kitchen Nook.
‘Dad’ Ken apologized for his delay and then told Phillip that the reason for his tardiness was that he was talking to his mother. The boy quickly asked if they were going to meet soon. ‘Dad’ Ken told the youngster that his mom was supposed to call him back by Wednesday to set the day and time. Phillip was disappointed, but he shrugged it off and went on to eat his dinner.
Later, when the Covers had their meeting, the teenagers asked their ‘dad’ if they could also have chips, potato salad and baked beans on Saturday for their barbeque with their classmates. They also told their ‘dad’ what they needed to ‘top off’ their supplies up at the Pavilion.
“Dad’ Ken told the boys they he’d leave a note for Mr. Wayne and Mr. Dennis to see if they could get the needed supplies. He also told the boys to expect them to be called upon to go with the men to go and get the supplies. Billy spoke up and said that they did that once before, and it was fun to go to the big stores and see all that they had.
Robert and Charles agreed with their older ‘brother’ saying that they too liked going to the big stores, and they’d like to help Mr. Wayne and Mr. Dennis, if they could. Matthew and Phillip asked if they could go along, then. Phillip then asked if those stores also had the potato salad and baked beans, so Momma wouldn’t have to make them. All the boys chuckled at the question.
The Covers did talk about that coming Saturday’s classmate skate, swim and barbeque. Phillip wanted to know how many of the seven should be girls and if he should tell the girls to bring their swimsuits. ‘Dad’ Ken smiled at them, then realized that this would be the first time that the young Cover was inviting girls from his class over to The Cove.
“Phillip, are there many girls in your class that you would like to invite over on Saturday?” asked the foster dad.
“Well, there aren’t any girls that are a pain in my backside if that’s what you mean, ‘dad’,” answered the youngster, as the older boys all chuckled at what he said.
“So, you’d like to invite all the girls then, I take it,” teased ‘dad’ Ken.
“I didn’t say that, ‘dad’. But I’ll probably have a problem figuring out who I should invite. I guess I’ll ask my friends to help me, since they know them better than I do,” reasoned Phillip. “But what about the girls bringing their swimsuits?” again asked the youngster.
“Boys … do you think there will be enough time for swimming?” ‘dad’ Ken wanted to know.
The boys looked at one another to see who was going to answer. It was Billy who decided to tackle the question.
“Mr. Ken … I think it will all depend on how the day goes, with the new invitees skating, playing the Pavilion games, and then how the barbeque goes. As for the barbeque, who knows how fast they’ll eat, if the boys and girls are going to do a lot of talking, as they eat, and how well the cleanup goes afterward.
“Then there is the weather to consider and what it will be like. I think we should tell all the new invitees to bring not only their skateboards, if they ride, and their swimsuits and towels just in case the weather chases us indoors. That will give us a place to go, and I think they will all want to see the pool, since they’ve undoubtedly heard about it, the jumping ledge and the games we’ve all played,” articulated the oldest teenager.
“Thank you, Bill. Now … who is going to cook? And what about those baked beans? How will you heat them, if you can find them at the big store?’ now asked ‘dad’ Ken.
Charles decided to answer his dad, and he told him that they can serve the potato salad in a nice silver serving dish, or something that looks good. The teen added that if they have baked beans they can place them in a crock pot, if they have one, or something similar, to warm while their classmates arrive and skate. The teen also said that they’d ask their friends to help with the tomato, lettuce and onion prep, and when it comes time to serve, they’ll ask them to help set up the serving line.
When Charles finished, Matthew spoke up and told his ‘brothers’ that they could do the veggie prep that morning. He explained that they shouldn’t be asking their regular friends to do a lot of the work for what was their picnic, and he stressed that it was ‘their’ picnic, or barbeque, and they should be the ones doing the bulk of the work.
Robert agreed with Matthew that they could go up to the Pavilion at ten o’clock and clean the lettuce, cut the onions and wash the tomatoes. The teen then said they could cut them just before they start cooking, so the tomatoes don’t get too watery. He then took the time to tease his younger ‘brother’ and asked him how many girls he was going to invite this time.
The pre-teen stuck his tongue out at his older ‘brother’ to show him he wasn’t too happy at the implication of the question. The boy then told the teen that he was thinking of inviting at least four girls, or maybe five, who hadn’t been over to The Cove. Hearing that caused the three teenagers to smile knowing how much their ‘brother’ used to avoid anything that had to do with girls.
With their questions answered about the coming Saturday’s barbeque, ‘dad’ Ken had the boys head up to their rooms to relax before going to bed. Then with the boys upstairs, Mr. Ken followed a few minutes later. His first stop was at Bill’s room.
Billy, of course, was interested in his upcoming visit to see his mother. Mr. Ken assured him that it was on the schedule and only a major catastrophe would change that. Billy thanked the man for doing that for him and that he couldn’t wait until he got to visit with his mother again.
When the man got to his son’s room, Robert told his dad that he hoped that his schedule would soon even out, so he wouldn’t be so busy. The teen’s dad told him that it always gets this way towards the Holidays, and after the New Year it should slow down some. The two shared a hug and then the man headed to his other son’s room.
Charles was waiting for his dad. And as soon as his dad arrived, Charles asked his dad if Miss Kate and her boys were coming for Thanksgiving. The question surprised the man, so he asked his son why he asked. Charles told his dad that he liked Kate and that he hoped that things would work out for them. Ken Thomas smiled at what his son said and the two hugged.
Dad Ken then told his son that Kate had some issues that she was working through because of Lane, and that he was trying to help her get through them. He confidently told his son that once she has all of those troubles out of the way, there could be a way towards their getting married. Charles told his dad that he was happy for him.
In Matthew’s room, ‘dad’ Ken told the pre-teen that he was happy that the boy was going to invite more girls over on Saturday. The pre-teen confessed that he was being foolish by ignoring the girls, and now that he is getting older, and he sees his older ‘brothers’ being more involved with the girls in their classes, he saw that he needs to do that, as well. ‘Dad’ Ken told the boy that he was happy for him, and the two shared a hug just before the man headed to Phillip’s room.
In Phillip’s bedroom, the boy quickly asked his ‘dad’ if he thought his mother would talk with him that coming weekend. ‘Dad’ Ken told his foster son that he surely hoped so, and that when she called back on Wednesday, he would encourage her to talk with him sometime other than when his classmates are over on Saturday.
Phillip thanked his ‘dad’ for at least making sure she didn’t interfere with that. ‘Dad’ Ken then asked the boy about Saturday, and how he planned to show his friends around The Cove.
Phillip said that he’d just show them the Pavilion, the games and that he’d probably take them down to the Patio and show them the cove, the personal watercraft, sailboats and answer any of their questions.
Mr. Ken asked his foster son if the band planned to play. Phillip replied that they needed to practice some, so that they will play for a little while before the barbeque, because afterwards the new kids might want to swim and he’ll have to be with them.
Mr. Ken told the boy that Mr. Bindy would also be there on Saturday, so as not to forget about his guitar lesson that morning. Phillip told his foster dad that his giving him the guitar lessons was one of the best things that he ever did for him. He added that he has learned so much from Mr. Bindy, and he knows he has so much more to absorb from him. The two shared a hug before Mr. Ken headed down to his own retreat.
As the owner of The Cove headed down to his master suite, Matthew and Sarge were also headed down the stairs. Again, ‘dad’ Ken was happy to see that the puppy master was training the new resident pet to go potty before going to bed every night.
Down in his retreat, Ken Thomas looked back at the day and saw that it had been a busy one. He learned that his realtor had an idea to possibly wrestle the plot of land next to the Four Corners Amusement Park into the complex, and he was hopeful he could make that happen.
He was also dismayed that they would have to dismantle the miniature golf course sooner than he wanted to, but he knew that it was going to happen eventually. The thing that he wanted to do was to save as many of the obstacles that he could, to use elsewhere in the park, as design features. He made a mental note to call Nelson tomorrow to have him dismantle the most interesting ones, and keep the parts and pieces for future use later within the park, before they bulldoze the site.
The man found his mind constantly working on aspects of his businesses, but especially the amusement parks. He knew he needed to relax before he laid down as he told his ‘boys’, so he tried to turn his mind off from work, as he used his en suite.
When Ken Thomas finally laid down for the night, he sensed the weight of the day fall off his shoulders. The man also felt relieved that the day was over, and that he could now fall asleep knowing he had done everything he needed to do that day. The Cove was peaceful and quiet the whole night through.
