The next day when Konnor showed up to work at the acreage, he brought his 17-year-old brother Kayden with him. The boy was a slightly smaller version of Konnor. He had the same color of eyes and hair, and he wore the same smile. His hair was a bit longer on the top and flopped down past his eyebrows.
“I’m not expecting you to pay Kayden. He’ll be working on the garden plot for me,” Konnor insisted. “Since he earns money helping me with lawns, he’s volunteering his time. Of course, I’ll share some of the profits I make from selling organically grown produce, assuming I’m successful. It’s kind of a gamble for both of us.
“By the way, what is the rent for using your space?”
“Justin said he’s allowing you to use it for free. If you decide to go big and use the rest of the 80 acres, you’ll need to pay rent like the farmers who are using it currently.”
“Wow! Your partner is generous. I’ll at least have to give you guys some vegetables if they turn out.”
Konnor and Kayden had packed lunches for their noontime meal, but Justin provided cold drinks and dessert. Not wanting to go back and forth from air conditioning to the heat of the day, they were pleased to be eating on the shaded patio near the pool.
It was pleasant, and it provided a time for Justin and Seth to get better acquainted with the brothers. Justin felt he’d made the right decision in allowing Konnor to pursue his dreams by using a section of the backyard.
As they were relaxing to allow their food to digest, Justin came up with an invitation to take a break and cool off midafternoon.
“You’re welcome to use the pool to get out of the heat this afternoon. We’re supposed to have a high of 89 F accompanied by high humidity. Be sure you drink plenty of water when you’re out there too.”
“I appreciate the offer, but we don’t have any swim trunks,” Konnor said.
“If you really want something to wear, I can probably scrounge up some old ones. However, Seth and I usually go skinny dipping. Of course, knowing both of us are gay might make you uncomfortable.”
“I’m all for skinny dipping!” Kayden said, excitedly.
“It’s cool with me, even if I’m the only straight guy in the bunch,” Konnor agreed.
“Damn it, Konnor! You promised,” Kayden cried out with a hurt look in his eyes.
“Sorry, Bro. I didn’t mean to out you. You know I wouldn’t hurt you intentionally.”
“If you’re gay, Kayden, we certainly won’t be offended,” Seth said, putting his arm around the boy’s shoulder. You’re among friends.”
“Thanks,” Kayden replied with a slight smile. “I guess I overreacted. I’m so used to hiding. It scares me to be out to the world.”
“It used to frighten me a lot too. When my parents kicked me out, I was in a panic. Then Justin offered me a place to live and I’m way happier than I was before.”
“If they kick you out, you can stay with Kayla and me,” Konnor offered. “You’ll never be on the street while I’m alive.”
“But you have a little one-bedroom apartment. You won’t want me underfoot.”
“We have several unused bedrooms,” Justin remarked. “Now that Seth is content to share mine, there would be plenty of room for you here.”
“I can’t believe you’d do that! You’re way too generous. You don’t really know me.”
“Well, I took a gamble with Seth, and it’s paid off in a big way. And, no, I’m not looking to take on an additional lover!!!”
The young men all went back to their yard projects. Kayden ran the tiller which Justin had allowed him to use, once he knew the kid could operate it without endangering himself. Konnor and Seth continued in the front, fitting the cavity which they’d hollowed out for the pond with a liner to keep the water from seeping out once it was filled. It had been excavated down to the clay below the topsoil, so it would be fairly watertight anyway, but this was an additional barrier. There were plenty of rocks at the edges of the fields which could be brought up to disguise the liner and create a natural finish to the edges.
After a couple of hours of intense labor, the guys were ready to take a break in the pool.
Justin was ready for a break too. He brought out a cooler filled with bottles of water and some soft drinks immersed in ice to quench their thirst.
Seth was the first to strip and shower off before plunging into the moderately cool water. Kayden and Konnor followed close behind. Justin joined them soon. All of them frolicked like little kids who had been let out for recess.
Amazingly, none of the gay guys threw any wood being naked together. Kayden might have if he hadn’t hit the water quickly. He’d rarely seen anyone with foreskin, so two of the cocks grabbed his attention. However, he’d been frightened about being outed in the locker room that he’d developed coping skills to tame his dick around other naked guys. Today’s experience would be relived in his imagination later at night in private.
They didn’t spend a lot of time in the pool, but it did refresh them for continuing their projects. Work seemed to progress at a faster pace after their break.
Justin found it to be as true for him as it did for the laborers. He’d been more hesitant to take nude breaks with outsiders present. He decided to do this more often, like he’d done when he was all alone.
Seth’s early June birthday fell on a Sunday this year, so Justin suggested that they get married on the Saturday before it so that Seth could celebrate his 19th birthday as a married man. Seth was all for it. He’d had a crush on Justin long before he’d moved into his house.
Kayden wanted to go with them to the courthouse so he could witness it. He was sad that he wasn’t considered old enough to sign as a witness. Konnor was, however, and he said he’d be happy to attend and sign. He called Kayla to ask her to be the other witness, but she said she wasn’t comfortable doing it for a gay wedding. He began to wonder how she would react when she found out about Kayden’s orientation. He would need to work on her attitude before they got any more serious in their relationship.
On the day of their wedding, Justin drove his SUV to pick up the brothers plus a gay teen from their church named Jerrod Jensen. Jerrod was barely past his 18th birthday, but so long as he was an adult, that was fine. Earlier, Justin had jokingly suggested having Grayson for their other witness. That was met with a huge eyeroll from Seth. While he wanted to make sure that Grayson knew he was spoken for, he didn’t want the guy around to spoil their special day.
Everyone was nicely, but casually, dressed for the brief ceremony at the courthouse. The judge added a few details to it so that it had a solemnity akin to a religious rite, after she’d asked the grooms their preferences. Of course, they used their beautiful titanium rings.
Since Kayden couldn’t participate as a witness, the men had asked him to be their photographer. He took his job seriously and captured photos which the grooms would treasure.
After the official pronouncement, Justin treated all of them to lunch at the Doubletree. Again, Kayden took photographs. Their waiter offered to snap a couple so that Kayden could be in them. His smile was possibly the biggest of anyone in the group.
Because of their busy schedules, the newlyweds had a very short honeymoon. Basically, it was Saturday through Sunday at noon. During that time, they occupied a room near the top of the Doubletree Hotel. Their wedding party had been driven home in Justin’s SUV with Konnor at the wheel, and he was picking them up at checkout time. That took care of transportation and left the grooms free to do as they pleased.
As might be expected, what pleased them was to explore each other’s bodies to the fullest extent. It wasn’t an entirely new experience, but it gave them the leisure to play without having any interruptions or distractions. They did go out for a walk around the tiny lake in the center of town, about three blocks from their hotel, before dinner on Saturday night. However, that was the extent of their venture outside of the facility.
Sunday afternoon was spent in their own backyard, a lot of that in the sun and the pool, nude of course.
Justin hadn’t forgotten that it was Seth’s birthday. This year, however, he had asked Konnor to pick up a cake at a bakery and put it in the fridge for their private celebration. Seth was pleased that Justin had remembered.
On Monday, everyone was back to work. Mostly, it was the old routine. However, Jerrod joined Kayden in weeding Konnor’s Garden. He had the day off from the part-time job he was doing before his freshman year at the University of Iowa. There seemed to be a connection forming between the pair. This was an unexpected consequence of the wedding, and one that Kayden loved.
Another unforeseen result was a rift in the relationship between Konnor and Kayla. The subject came up when Seth and Konnor were finishing some details in the front part of the acreage.
“You seem kind of sleepy today,” Seth said. “Is this from a problem some straight guys refer to as ‘sleeping next to an open crack?’” he grinned.
“I wish. Actually, I’ve been on the couch in the living room since Saturday. She’s pissed that I participated in your wedding instead of skipping it like she thought I should.”
“Man, we didn’t mean to mess up things for you. We could have had someone at the courthouse sign instead. I feel bad.”
“No, you’re not to blame. I like, and respect, both of you guys. I didn’t want to miss your special day and Kayden didn’t either. Maybe it’s a good thing this has come up now. She’s fun in bed, but I’ve been fearing how she would react to having a gay brother-in-law when we got married. If she’s going to act like this, I should probably get out before I’m trapped. I’ve been noticing other times when she pouts if she doesn’t get her way. They say love is blind, and maybe I’ve had my eyes closed too long.”
“I guess I’m really lucky,” Seth mused. “Justin has always made sure that he doesn’t treat me like a kid. Um, I know I’m not all that mature, and he’s a lot wiser about stuff, but he doesn’t give me advice unless I ask for it. I mean, he’s always there for me, but he doesn’t try to run my life. I think that’s what a true partnership is supposed to be.”
“Me too! I have a lot of serious thinking to do. It seems out of character for her to treat me like this. All of a sudden, she doesn’t want to be touched. I’m not sure what’s going on.”
The third unexpected reaction to the wedding came from Konnor and Kayden’s mother. They had told Sonja they were having lunch with Justin and Seth on Saturday at the Doubletree, but they hadn’t told her it was in honor of the gay union they were participating in. She found out at the salon when Jerrod’s mother had shown photos of it to her stylist. Marie Jensen hoped that her son might find a partner as nice as Justin some day and have a similar rite. Sonja had asked to see the pictures and had seen her younger son sitting close to Jerrod. Not knowing why Sonja was interested, Marie had offered to email her a copy. Sonja had been deciding on how to bring up the subject with Konnor.
“I don’t think your brother should be hanging around gay people who might try to lure him into their lifestyle,” she said.
“What are you talking about, Mom?” Konnor asked.
“When I was getting my hair done yesterday, I saw a photo of Kayden with the guys you’re working with and some boy who is openly gay. His mother seems to be fine with it. You didn’t tell me the kind of men you’re hanging around with. I’m not happy that you’re shacking up with Kayla, but at least I know you’re not gay. I am angry that you kept their orientation from me. Since you’re an adult, I can’t forbid you from working with them, but I don’t have to let Kayden get involved.”
“I didn’t tell you they were gay because it’s no one’s business and because I wasn’t sure how you would react. Now, I know. I thought you were more open-minded. I mean, you’re not a right-wing religious nut. You’ve never said being gay was a sin.”
“I don’t think it is, but it’s against nature.”
“Mom, I may not be into having a relationship with someone of my own sex, but it’s not unnatural. There are male animals who pair up with other males. There have been cases of male penguins raising abandoned chicks together. In fact, there was an article on the Internet about a couple named Sphen and Magic who were together for six years. When Sphen died, his partner mourned his passing much like a human would.”
“Well, that doesn’t mean they had sex.”
“Okay, I’m going to tell you about a couple of gorillas in the Bronx Zoo who got, um, amorous in front of crowds of visitors. One of them sucked the other one’s penis.”
“That’s disgusting! I didn’t need to hear that.”
“Yes, you did. You made a statement that isn’t based on facts, and it’s my duty to correct it. You can Google it, or I’ll give you the link if you want to see it for yourself. There’s also a whole section on same sex behavior in animals on Wikipedia. I think you should be informed about what’s natural and what isn’t before you judge what other people do. You might end up hurting someone close to you without intending to.”
“Are you suggesting that your brother might be gay?”
“I didn’t say that. I can only speak for myself, not Kayden or anyone else.”
“I think I’ll have a little talk with him to find out.”
“What if he says he IS gay? Would you throw him out? I really don’t think it’s a good thing to confront him. He’s kind of fragile in some ways.”
“Maybe he’d better grow a spine if he’s determined to be different.”
“People don’t decide to be gay.”
“So, you’re saying he is gay.”
“NO! Like I said, it’s not my business one way or another.”
“Kayden, we need to talk.” Konnor said, coming into his room unannounced.
“What did I do wrong?”
“Nothing. It’s about that photo of you and Jerrod from the wedding lunch. Mom has a copy, and she’s upset that we’ve been hanging around with gay guys.”
“Shit! How did she find it? Did you leave a copy lying around.”
“No! She got it from Jerrod’s mom.”
“That’s impossible. They don’t even know each other.”
“Kayden, this is a smaller town than you realize. They met at the hair salon. Jerrod’s mom was showing the picture to her stylist and the other women because she thought it was cool that Jerrod got to be in a gay wedding with guys from their church. Now Mom wants to grill you about your orientation.”
“Damn! What am I gonna do? Maybe I should just come out and get it over with.”
“I can’t tell you what to do. I will stand by you if you decide to come out. I suppose I should go home and see if Kayla is still pissed with me.”
“I wish you’d stay here. Maybe Mom will feed you supper.”
“I’m not all that welcome since I’m ‘shacking up.’ I’m not sure she’d feed me.”
“Then, let’s go out to eat. I’ll buy. You can come back to be with me when I tell the ‘rents.’ If things go bad, maybe you could put me up. I know I won’t be able to sleep with this on my mind.”
Konnor texted Kayla to ask about dinner plans. When he received no response, he agreed to Kayden’s suggestion but said they should go Dutch treat.
When Kayden and Konnor came back home, they found their parents in the family room.
“Well, it looks like I guessed correctly,” Sonja said, as the boys came in.
“Yes,” Kayden nodded. “I’m gay.”
“I figured those boys were influencing you.”
“No, I’ve always been gay. It wasn’t until last year that I finally came to realize it.”
“Are you sure?” Karl asked.
“Yup.”
“Well, be careful that you don’t catch some bad disease. Otherwise, I guess it’s no one’s business.”
“Karl! I don’t like your attitude.”
“Sorry, Sonja, but that’s how I feel about it. Kayden didn’t have a choice in the matter. Whatever his destiny is, he’s still my son and I love him just the same.”
Kayden hurried over to his father and hugged him. The tears he shed were not only from joy but also from relief.
“While we’re on the subject of loving your son, would it be okay if I came home to live for a while?” Konnor asked. “Things with Kayla aren’t going that well. I’d be willing to pay rent.”
“If you contribute to the food bill, that would be enough,” Karl said. “Groceries are kind of expensive these days. The price of eggs is pretty steep. I wonder if the chickens went on strike for higher wages.”
“Thanks!”
Konnor texted Seth to say that Kayden and he might come in later than usual because he had business to take care of. Seth responded immediately saying that he would start late too because the Buick dealer wanted to talk to him. If he didn’t get back in time to work with Konnor, Konnor and Kayden could work on the garden instead of their landscape project. It would all work out.
Konnor said he had good news which would best be shared face to face.
